Is there a way to remove everything from a song on a CD except the vocals to do a remix? Question

Yes, sometimes. For some very repetitive music that's made entirely in the computer it'll be possible to use phase cancelling and get most of the parts out separately. This is a lot of work that's very precise and labour intensive as well as boring and it'll only work well for sample-based and repetitive music. It's no fun either.

Don't do it unless you get paid for it.

I think Carlo might be suggesting that this is pretty hard to do, in fact near impossible. In some cases you can extract certain content or kill certain stuff but in those cases the stuff you kill will have other phase characteristics you can exploit as well as you can find what is the same in both channels and kill the rest or whatever. These methods are highly useful but still rather crude. In your case I guess you simply have to edit out suitable sections and then try to filter out the most nasty stuff. Keep in mind that some bleed can i work if the new mix is busy enough.

The trend these these is to whack the output bus with exciters and "tube" flavor warmth and compression and reverb and stuff. This means that the resulting stereo mix contains all sorts of phasey bleed and artifacts. This can sound pretty good at times but it doesn´t leave you with a track that makes it easy to extract backing vocals based on phase characteristics.

Why not simply use the original multitrack files?

......because the person that I said I would do a remix for sent me her finished CD. Laughing NOT the session file. Shocked I assumed she was sending me the session file....so I'm a little mystified and I'm trying to figure out the words of an email I have to send explaining this.....! Rolling Eyes
