I haven't heard either of those artists but I like dirty electro beats, too. However, my idea of dirty and your idea of dirty may be different. Nice avatar, btw.
So, when you say 'dirty', are you referring to the swing or the funkiness of the beats or are you referring to the timbre of the individual percussion sounds? Do you want crunchiness, distortion, lo-fidelity? |

"dirty" has a couple of ways to look at it.
There's the rhythm. "dirty" can mean sexy, jazzy/hiphop, or just nasty.
There's the timbres. "dirty" usually means raw, or bit-reduced. Noisy. Ugly.
There's the feel. Different from rhythm. The feel, is how you play it.
Do you feel dirty, when you play it.
I don't know if I'm getting the point across. But subjective terms like "dirty" can mean a lot of things.
You could always say whose "dirty" you're trying to sound like. But I don't like to sound like anybody else, I like to sound like me, so my dirty ain't your dirty, if you know what I mean.
But yeah, if you want to talk dirty, I'd listen, musically, at least. Explain what you mean, explain what you're trying to sound like.

|
Yeah, well like i said dirty as in dirty south etc. :p Beat's such as them. If you havnt heard them im looking for the hard distorting effect. I just cant explain it, the best i can say is download some of there tune's and you will realise what im getting at !
Like i said any help would be much appreciated.
You got a point with classifying dirty, i should rephrase that and just implent me trying too make similar beat's too dirty south etc.
I just dont know where too get started and the vst's too use !
Thanks alot guys |

Dirty South - Better Day
This one is basically one riff/theme ( in brit synth pop style of 1980-84 ) repeated again and again. There are a few other synth voices in there .. simple stuff. Underneath are some "contemporary drum loops" chiming away. Actually, such loops are a bit overused and they don´t contribute much to the groove. He has that riff in MIDI on his DAW so he is at times changing the synth sounds onnit and I´m even hearing a "rythm guitar" in there near the end somewhere. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

TV Rock - The Others
Nice.
A nice little clunky riff, perhaps drum loops are a bit too timid, the punk style vocals are nice and.. it´s way too short. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

In order to make music like this you need a computer, DAW software like Cubase or Logic or whatever, a few softsynths and some CD-ROMs with drum loops. Perhaps you might want to record vocals later on. You need to do some research into british synth pop and learn to make simple riffs that kinda sounds right. Layer some drums underneath. Then you should decide if you want to make songs like TV Rock does or simply flat pavement style mixes like Dirty South does. If you decide to make songs, then you will have to pay attention to how pop songs structured.
It is really a bit more complex than what I have described here, but this will get you there.. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

eeeek !!! it does sound more complex then it seem's ! I've basically given myself a general idea of what you said, and still cant produce those beat's !
Tv Rock - The Other's is a awesome hit in the australian chart's and goes absolutely nut's in club's ! Like i said, i'm trying to get a ruff idea on how too make these beat's so i can start somewhere and hopefully post my work here
Thanks !

you might also want to check out a Korg Electribe ESX 1 sampler. This is a weapon of choice for a lot of producers (including myself) for big drums. It is rather good for some of the drum tones you would be interested in and truthfully, has a really hard full bodied, and when needed, lo-fi, electro feel. I know Ellen Alien and The Hacker are quiet into these boxes. On the other hand and on the more abstract/aggro side, Pan Sonic did a set at the studio I worked at with one and it basically demolished my hearing and body with the low end ... for about a week.
The box is a lot of fun, immediate, and just sounds good
