Nord Rack 2 stored sounds Subject description: Rack to Lead compatibility |
 |
|
Does anyone remember if I can take sounds stored on a Nord memory card from my Rack2 and use them on a Nord Lead? Slightly obscure question, I know, but I am playing abroad and where I am going cannot provide me with a Nord Rack2, only a Lead (not sure which model of Lead it is, unhelpfully...).
I was hoping to simply bring my sounds for the gig on the memory card, but i have a vague recollection that the Nord Lead can't do all the things the Rack does - especially in terms of more complex sonds involving LFO modulation and stuff... |

Be sure what Lead it will be!!! NordLead, NordLead2, NordLead2X or Nordlead3. Only the last one is impossible to get your sounds in, because it's a completely different synth. (And believe me, most users call a NordModular often NordLead!)
Your memory PCMCIA card will fit in NordLead, NordRack, NordLead2 and of course your NordRack2. NordLead and NordRack will sound slightly different, but they will sound. (No RingMod nor Distortion, though) I just checked out a NordLead2 card in a NordRack and it sounds almost the same. Nice to make some mp3 in the future:)
To get you data into a NordLead2X you'll need a computer capable to send SysEx data. Make a copy of your own SysEx on different media (CD-ROM, USB-stick, FlashCard or what ever - please think also of a page on the internet which can be reached by you - you can use this forum too, if needed) and dump your data into the Lead2X.
But check out what kind of synth you'll be using over there!
If it appears to be a NordLead(1) it has to be expanded, otherwise the cards will not fit into the machine!!! Then you have to send SysEx into the synth also...

As I wrote before, Nord(1), Nord2 and Nord2X are using the same thing, although the Nord(1) is more limited then the two later synths.
In the worst case it will be a unexpanded Nord(1), which means only 4 voices in total, no RingMod, no Distortion and a beautiful designed machine, but you'll get the PitchStick and Wheel in return
Indeed, the sounds will be different: raw in the Nord to almost soft in the Nord2X

Thanks for that. I'm not fussed about the finer points of the sounds - in this case it is more things like the various LFO modulation and arpeggiator speeds synched to Midi that I need to be able to use. I'll make sure it is a Nord Lead2 or 2x then that they hire for me.
I won't even begin to mention the fact they can't hire me a Roland SH101 or an MC202... |

Apart from the NordLead3 all Leads use the same values, so the same Program loaded into the a Nord(1) gives the same modulations and Arpeggiator speeds, only synch you have to set yourself as a global feature in the 'special' settings. (take notes )
I am more concerned about how to get your sounds into the synth. Just taken with you a PCMCIA card containing your Programs could mean trouble!
NordLead(1): only when it is expanded, which means there is a card holder.
NordLead2: no problem.
NordLead2X: no way, because it doesn't have a card holder!
When problems occur you'll have to use a computer. Then you have to get the data from the card into the computer first...
Most likely they hire from a shop, so it would be a NordLead2X; a NordLead(1) is very rare in shops these days...
Anyway I always follow the rule I am responsible from the power plug (250V or 115V) to the two cables you want to plug into the PA system (That last one I mostly handle myself too). Even be sure your plugs will fit into their system!!!

Nice one, boss. Thanks for that. Worst comes to the worst I'll do a bit of quick reprogramming on the spot. Never too hard to get enough bleeps and bloops up. |
