nord modular to cv/gate Subject description: is this possible? |
 |
|
Hello
I was just wondering if it was possible to control a pre midi synth (cv/gate) with a nord modular. I just got a roland sh09 and I'm pretty new to the world of cv/gate, and for all I know this type of thing might be impossible. I'm sure I can get some sort of triggering going on but has anyone out there managed to create a proper midi to cv/gate converter patch? any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated
Thanks |

I realize this is the opposite of what you want to do, but it is
here for reference anyway.
You send CC values via from the NM1 via midi, but not midi note on/off events. You would need something that converts CC to CV like this http://www.paia.com/midi2cv.asp or this
http://www.audiomidi.com/master.cfm?CID=134.
You would be better off using a Nord Modular G2 along with a midi to CV conversion system because the G2 has a better midi implementation than the NM1.

Thanks for the reply cappy 2112.
I aware of the conversion boxes but I'm finding it a bit hard to find one locally. looks like I'll have to order one online, anyway I just thought maybe somehow I could use 2 of the external outs as cv and gate and program some sort of patch that would send the corresponding messages. I guess I should have been a little more clear in my post. The more I look into this the more I'm thinking this is not going to work. |

yeah- these are specialty items. I wouldn't expect many to find these locally.

Well, not on a factory NM1. It would take some minor surgery, if you're comfy with a solering iron, but then I think you would only be able to use that modified output for CV, not gate.
This actually has been done, at least by one person in this forum.
Do a search for CV or 'AC coupled' or 'coupling cap' and you might get lucky. One of the admins will probably chime in, they have every message indexed in their heads

If you do the mod, you will end up with some sort of control capability, but not exactly what you want. _________________ Free Tibet. Release the Panchen Lama from prison. Let the Dalai Lama return to his home. |

I don't think I'm quite ready to mod my modular just yet but it's pretty cool to know that it can be done. maybe I'll have to buy another one.
thanks again cappy2112 |

Now that I think about this- it may have been a G2 that someone yanked the cap in the output from, but the principal is still the same. You can't output a DC voltage from an audio output, because there are caps passing the audio, but blocking DC. _________________ Free Tibet. Release the Panchen Lama from prison. I modified my G2X to get a CV output, described here:
http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-12266.html
The Nord Modular probably has DC blocking caps at the outputs. Bypassing them would allow for CV or gate signal output. _________________ varice Last edited by varice on Sun Jan 11, 2009 10:51 am; edited 1 time in total |

Indeed, it's just like the G2 in that respect.
Here is some info from the nord modular list proposing another approach involving a precision rectifier.

This "built in" index you mention is in fact just the search function of the forum and/or google ... it's too bad though the forum doesn't index two letter words like cv, ac, dc, nm, g1, g2 ... but I seem to remember ... that Sven (3phase) did something like this too hmm ... not sure ... too long ago. _________________ Jan

Bad reading season, indeed!
Actually, Sven was inspired by my G2X mod and discusses his G2 mod in the thread. _________________ varice |
