Share your thoughts on experimental composition. |

I do a lot of experimental noise music. Right now im trying out some fresh thinking in terms of composition, performance and recording, largely influenced by a limited time frame. I don't have hours to spend on expressing what i want, so why not learn to be a little more "effective". It is a challenge.
How has your view on composition and arranging changed with your music making? Share some ideas that has made experimental music making more fun for you to deal with. |

my thoughts on Computer generated music & Experimental composition is this I think that its a great way of creating new and exciting music. there are several different forms and ways of creating experimental compositions fractals are probably the most well know but there also text-2-midi,geophonics & converting images into midi.. Though computer generated compositions are not the only way to create experimental compositions found sound recordings is another great source of experimentation.. all in all I have to say I'm a huge fan of it and will continue to create it and share it with how ever may want to listen..

I agree with you. Field recordings are the only thing you need for any art piece in terms of random influence. I actually missed a night concert with field recordings from deserts last week. That would have been mind-expanding for sure. I mean, what possible sound are there besides wind in a desert?
Currently, im trying to implement two wiimotes into my setup to make things a little more living. Its actually pretty fucking awesome since you can not only assign CC to the buttons, but also to specific angles. To make the wiimotes relate angles to each other (or three-dimensional distances (which would, theoretically, require at least wiimotes right?) would be the ultimate control medium right there.
What sound recordings have you found and how have you used them? |

my brain circuits are twisted up into crazy unreproducible patterns. when i record i go for sounds that make them "tingle" and when mixing i try to get rid of all the parts that don't, or at least alter them as such that they do.
that's pretty much the only way i can describe it. _________________ don't make me get all black metal

Sounds intriguing! What kind of music do you make? Has your way of composing been there from the beginning or did it evolve with your music? |

i've been playing guitars for about ten years, and usually am pretty unsatisfied with the results. focused mostly on indie rock and/or the extremes of death/thrash metal. these days i've been listening to lots of sonic youth and taking away from that what i can...
my composition style has always kind of been there, but i feel like the layers of bullshit have been stripped off over the years to where i'm more or less pleased with pretty much anything that i end up with. _________________ don't make me get all black metal

I felt like everything i ever put together was bullshit until i went into the noise genre. Its good when things hit home. |

I think experimentation is what makes music evolve, and that the relative ease of producing and distributing experimental music, compared with the methods used 20 years ago, is responsible for the huge amount of ridiculous subgenres that some try to identify with.
I'm learning that there are sounds and rhythms that I have never been exposed to that are very pleasing to my ears, and they are easily explored using software instead of trying to collect hardware that can do the same. |
