NIN Nord Modular Subject description: sounds? |
 |
|
Hey guys,
so I am sure some of you at least here saw the Nord Modular from the Into The Void video on sale on ebay recently. It went for quite a bit for the condition it was in.
That said, I was wondering if anyone here picked it up? I really hope whoever picked it up will share the sounds on it...that album changed me, and that video (this nord actually) exposed me to the nord modular for the first time. |

That video? What makes you think the sound is even the NM? I don't think it's the NM being played, they can throw all their instruments about without it affecting the sound of the song, vocals go on without anyone near a mic, etc. On top of that we are expected to believe this is a acoustical drumkit with a reverse highhat in it. Seems nearly completely playback to me. could be any instrument, could be a sample library. _________________ Kassen |

Hello West Berliner,
We spoke some time ago and you had asked these same questions of me because I own two of the NM's that were used on "Into the Void".
I can tell you that those sounds were created by Trent and they exist in the NM's. Still, I have to back up what was said in reply to your question and comments by another user.
Yes, there are literally tracks that can be played on the NM1 by hitting just one key just once. The Key NM1 literally has tracks with drums, bass, synth sounds playing on one patch that are NIN songs created by NIN.
So, the reply was just in many ways, but I believe that people do expect a show to be pretty close to perfect when they are paying quite a bit of money. I believe live is live and it includes playing live, but I am not one to judge and I do not think it takes away from Trent Reznor whatsoever.
He really did learn how to use the NM1.
I hope you are doing well!
Thanks! |

Kassen,
yeah no the video is most definitely playback, like the majority of music videos. I was merely talking about the solo sound itself. that said, the sound that im talking about sounds like a nord sound to me (not to say that i couldn't program it on my virus as well, but it has that nord character)
Hey PhaseChange! nice to see you're still around here I can imagine that there are a lot of complex patches on the modular you own, some that make up full songs. I've done the same thing for my own music; some of my patches make up the majority of what ended up being a song, just by hitting one key.
And you're right about what people expect when they go to see a live show, I expect the same, but it definitely does include playing live (I usually like a little bit of improvisation during a concert...i don't want it to sound exactly like it does on the cd). I definitely do not think playing from playback (especially during the filming of a music video) takes away from Trent, or anyone for that matter
Thanks for replying! Hope you're well too, and that things are picking up a little down there in NOLA.
I think you guys misunderstood me with this thread it was more my curiosity to see if anyone here picked up the nord that recently went on ebay, and if so, if they were going to share some sounds on it. I think it would be interesting to hear, and see how they were programmed.
but replies are appreciated nonetheless!
Happy Holidays! |

Ah, I didn't realise this was meant as a music video, I think Trent had been posting videos of his practice sessions and stuff.
I think I'd use a simple modulated osc for this, combined with a set of parallel bandpass filters for that sound, assuming you mean the one that sounds a bit like a hit resonant beam. Sounds to me like most of what makes it sound good is in the eq at the desk, some reverb and a quality compressor. _________________ Kassen |

yeah, haha, the video you posted is from the making of the music video it was originally posted on NIN.com a long time ago i believe.
this is the video itself, which exposed me to the NM. and im still so glad it did, 10 years later. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--gYZPryLtA
and you're right, a lot of it is the mix, and eqing etc. it's also wide sounding, so it could be double tracked, etc. i just think it's a very simple, but very cool sound. |

Probably, yes. I used to be into Downward Spiral era NIN, that stuff is produced by Dave "Rave" Oglivy, he also produced Too Dark Park era Skinny Puppy, Manson's Antichrist Superstar, etc. I think he double or triple-tracks basically everything, with different FX and eq per channel (and quite a lot of channels pushed to the red at the gain, then down at the fader). That gives that layered distortion without killing all the dynamics. I think he also pans those channels, then groups them.
I think that's where Trent picked up the habit, Pritty Hate Machine sounded very different.
As interesting as these patches may be I think the best thing you could do if you want that "NIN sound" is to listen to what Dave was doing across a few different albums by a few different artists. _________________ Kassen |
