Hi

I recently got an EMU XL7 and was wondering which are the expansions for it that are worth looking for?

I didn't got time to explore its synth engine yet, but I think I will be using it more for drums and effects.

My music is quite inspired by old Berlin School music and ambient and experimental music. Not that much interested in Techno...
Which are the best ROMs for the XL7 that fit my proposes?

Best regards

Paugui

The Vintage Collection board is nice, it has lots of old string synths, mellotrons and the like, but it's quite rare so usually costs a fair bit.

The standard Composer rom is full of your normal everyday sounds and is usually quite cheap

The XL-7 rom has pretty good drums already, the next ones to look for would be the protean drums (PX-7) and world expedition (planet earth).
Both may be hard to find or a bit expensive.
I agree with Jez - the vintage and composer roms are good, composer is easier to find.

That's good to know.

I have to explore my XL7 a bit more and then I'll try to check the ROMs you mentioned.

By the way, any of the Orchestral ROMs are really good and worth to have?

Best regards and thanks

I just saw this website mentioned in another site:

http://www.eprelectronics.com/store/html/Products/E-mu-Accessories/E-mu~Ensoniq-Sound-ROMS/index.html

I was considering getting the Composer ROM and likely the Orchestral Sessions Volume 1 (is this one worth getting without Volume 2?) and Beat Garden.

Are these good choices?
Or are other better ROMs for sale in this store (I only have the XL7 original ROM)?

Is that if I get those 3, my XL7 will be full.

The prices seem good, so I am quite thinking about going forward, but not sure if it might be wiser to wait and get other boards instead...

Did you ask around at the P2K and XL7 Yahoo User groups? I have the P2500 version of the Composer ROM which as a good assortment of multipurpose presets, the XLEAD ROM (XL-1 version), a Protozoa ROM (Proteus/1/2/3 sounds, and AOrch (string/wind ensenbles + orch perc. - not solo orchestra instruments).

If you will be designing presets, look at the ROM instrument listings to see what's on each. I am assuming the P2K ROM at eprelectronics has presets setup for 12-controller units, so in the XL-7 you'd proably want to set up your own presets to use the full set of 16 knobs.
