 5 hours to "upgrade"?

Meh. Upgrade in process... and it's 'stuck' on the backup process. There is no way I can disable or avoid this process as far as I can see...
5 hours. That's what it took me the last time I upgraded - the reason being, I suspect, that I am using TouchDJ which has its own library. Still, I would expect that sort of time from a USB 1 connection. I have not filled more than about 4 gigs of memory on my iPod.
Meh.
Then bloody Apple forces me to upgrade iTunes because the current version is not able to upgrade my iPod. Then there is the size of iTunes - 100 mb for one application? What is there in iTunes that requires so much space? No light version either.
And no, I don't want Safari thanks! Neither QuickTime (now you are taking the piss!)
Every time I go through this process I am reminded of how much I hate people thinking for me, even if I do that part worse than them. It is also a good reason to hold back on an iPad for the moment I think.

Heheh, I see what you did there!
Still backing up, a little over half way now.
I think next time I'll go to the Mac Shop to get it upgraded, see if they are willing to do it for me... Does that sound like a good idea?

There is a version about to be released- this (and all the Beatles LP's on iTunes now too- woohoo!!!), must have been what else was released today (been at a developers conference all day, so I missed the fireworks).
I think the updating is the same for all- but you can speed everything up by stopping your photos from backing up as well.

You mean, everybody goes through this every time they upgrade? And nobody complains?? Maybe I just need to shut up and get on with it!
Er... about a quarter left now... If I had the full 32 gig of memory to back up this would take days. I'm exhausted!

I'm a developer myself, and am dreading the OS upgrade for my iPhone, though apparently the experience is kinder to owners of the 3GS model (which I have) than owners of earlier models.

When doing an upgrade, I tend to leave it running over night (but just like sods law, you get downstairs in the morning to find one of those "are you sure you want to do this" windows has popped up- so you have to wait another 12 hours!  
Yes, us fanbois are quite happy to put up with this shit fromtime to time, because we all know that once working, the product is pretty damn good otherwise.

It took 10 hours in the end, but yes - it is done now and I shall stop complaining. Thanks for the moral support though!

Usually this means that you should try this:
Disconnect the iPhone. Turn off 3G and mobile data and WIFI. Restart.
Connect to the computer again and let iTunes do what it is supposed to do.
Turn on the stuff again.
Which iPhone and OS version ..? This is not a device running ios 4 and the latest version of iTunes? Or?
