Modulo Magic! |

I've been interested in this module for awhile and can't find any sound samples or panel layouts etc.
I don't think I quite grasp the "8 stages" to the module.
I have however done some tests with the modulo object in max (%~) and it can surely generate some interesting waveforms.
Any comments on this peculiar module?

It looks like it is similar to what you've been playing with. The 8 stages means it can put up to 8 of those steps in a single slope. Your diagrams are only showing around 3 steps. _________________ http://www.cgs.synth.net/ |

Ha, just finished mine and love it! Don't know what it is doing nor why but it is way cool.
No, serious testing so far and I'm not even sure if I've done every thing correctly (how can I know with this little beast), but I'm having fun with it and that's what's all about.

theres a primitive (as of now) link on the bridechamber page
it shows a panel layout and hopefully scott will upload sound samples eventually
i really want to build one because i love using modulo functions in different microcontroller and software implementations but lots of knobs (which is normally a good thing!) but the current synth im working on needs to be portable (i use public transit a lot) |

Can anyone help me understand this module in terms of possible applications and what one might expect to happen?
For instance, what if the "reference/ step initiation CV" was a equivalent of a semitone value (for a 1 volt per octave VCO)? Is this possible?, or does the Ref. CV have to be a whole number value?
Even so, with whole number voltage steps, this is still manipulating octaves. But how? You have a reference voltage, which can be hooked up to an 8 position switch, I understand; This provides a CV range?
and then there's the step size input (add or sub), this determines the cv jump?
and then there's the input cv...
I'm very confused. |

I think I've got now, after reading the circuit description closer:
The Reference CV is divided into 8 stages, and each of the 8 stages are compared with the input CV (plus offset) to trigger a switch. When each switch is opened, it sends the step size CV to a buffer that mixes it with the input CV. So, you get the Step Size CV(x number of stages) plus the input cv at the output each time the comparators fire. |

OK-- so here's something-- would it, or could it be possible to have VC over"number of stages"? So, there would be a CV input instead of or in addition to the 8 position rotary switch?
Does anyone have an idea on how I might go about this? Seems like with some additional comparator section, that could send each stage to ground via a particular voltage level.
having voltage control over number of stages might be very useful. |

quick question
i only have 6 places on my rotary switch
if i had to leave off 2 steps would it be lower or higher? or should i just miss say 3 and 6. i guess im asking where are the sweet spots on this dial. im going to wire it up with 1 and 2 missing to begin with. _________________ problemchild

If I had to choose, I'd leave off the higher and keep the lower.
I am currently redesigning my panel for Modulo Magic it will include the following controls and inputs:
Offset Init and Offset CV
Step Initiation and Step Initiation CV
Number of Steps switch
Input Signal Level
Step Size Init and CV (that is, the Step Size Add amount)
Signal and Aux Signal In
Offset CV In
Step Init CV In
Step Size CV In
Main Output
I am going to omit the toggle switches that Ken suggests and just have the init controls vary from negative to positive. _________________ -- Kevin
