adapting SOIC 2164 to DIP for Mankato |
 |
|
Hello Friends,
I'm a fairly newish DIYer. I've gathered PCBs and parts for TH's 2206 VCO, the Mankato filter and also the MPS. Haven't started work on any of them yet. I've been distracted into Lunettaland for a while, which probably isn't such a bad thing while I hone various skills.
Anyway I digress... I have all the parts for the above three I think, except the 2164s I bought (can't seem to bring myself to buy one of anything) turned out to be surface mount. Is there a simple kludge to adapt a 16-pin SOIC to DIP while keeping all the pins in the right spots? Or should I just fork out a few bucks and buy the right ones this time?

Thanks for your reply, Matthias.
I saw these, but the prices I saw weren't as good as Futurelec's. Looks like just the job. Once pins are soldered on, will it slot into a standard DIP socket?

If you don't have time to wait and add an adapter to your next parts order, and you have one of those helping-hands things, steady hands, nerves of steel, and plenty of patience, you could probably solder pieces of cut off resistor lead onto the leads of the SOIC. It would be a little Frankenstein-looking but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Good luck!

Hey Richard,
I'm thinking of working on some surface mount stuff (maybe a smaller SMT Mankato?), so if you want, I'll trade you DIP 2164s for your surface mount parts. Let me know.

Thanks Tim. That sounds like the perfect solution. I'll pop them in the post. |

Okay, I think that will work nicely for me too. Like I say, I want to see how small I can make a Mankato using SOICs and 0805 or 1206 passives (I'm thinking half the size of the current board, which will make it possible to fit one in those ridiculously shallow Euro cases that Doepfer sells). Then I'm going to see how much of a PITA it is to assemble. Maybe offer some simple SMT boards like an LFO or something as an introduction to SMT.

It's a bit embarrassing but I can't find those chips anywhere, Tim. Maybe I tossed them out by mistake.
If you can manage it please do send me a couple of the thru-hole variety ones anyway. I'll paypal you some money.
I even ordered some of those adaptors before you made your super-helpful offer, so I'm ready next time I can only find something in surface-mount format!
If the chips do turn up I'll check with you and see if they're still of any use.

@Richard - Bummer. I hate it when I lose chips. I'll send you a message about our price for the 2164 chips and all the other info. We've got them in stock, so it's no problem.
@Danno - I'll take you up on that offer. I have one or two of the SMT parts already, but it wouldn't hurt to have a few spares just in case. Who knows what I'll blow up trying to get a Surface Mankato built up. I'll send you a message and we'll iron out the details.

Hi Appliance,
Yes, it will! You'll notice that the signal amplitudes are a little lower when self oscillating, but other than that you should be just fine.

Aha! Found the little buggers. Nestling amongst my stash of anti-static bags. Still of any use to you, Tim? |
