What's All This Then

My serial numbering system for compositions started at number 1 and passed 200 last year. Some years were prolific, others very dry (I went for 5 or 6 years at one point with nothing new). Fortunately for the world, a lot of my compositions are not on surviving recordings.

There are some which are a interesting but never really fit onto an album. Here are a few as they all have interesting stories behind them.

Bill Thompson is a soundscape artist who is originally from the US but has spent a lot of time doing his doctorate in Aberdeen, Scotland. One of his most memorable recordings is of wind blowing on scaffolding (the recording is called McAlpine) and when he put it out of the SoundAsArt list (I still subscribe) I started thinking about doing something like that in Max/MSP.

Ultimately I did two different approaches. Here they are.

This piece was one of the first pieces I submitted to electro-music.com for comment. I was playing with my then brand new MacBeth M5N.

This was before I had built my Klee, Baby10, or any of the modular stuff in the current incarnation. I used M to sequence this with.

The, I think, was the first piece I posted a reference to at least on electro-music.com. This was with my then brand-new Wretch Machine. I think it uses the Wretch, SE-1X, Voyager, and the Procussion.

This is an exercise with the Eigenharp Alpha (that thing in my avatar, with the lights). It is done entirely with the Alpha and its EigenD control environment.

Interesting things in it are the oboe which is from a soundfont which is being controlled by the breath controller, the first main lead is Aalto, second lead is TAL Noisemaker. There is an accompaniment from Omnisphere and the stuff at the end is all done on Omnisphere too. The loops are various things I have been porting into my EigenD environment (astute listeners might recognise some). The drum loops are all ported in from Garageband mostly, converted to things the Eigenharp can play in its Drummer. There are some sequences programmed into the Arranger as well as can be heard.

This is another Eigenharp study. It is a transcription of one of my Ephemera themes (from spring equinox 2011) but entirely on the Eigenharp Alpha and within the EigenD environment. It's a bit long but I was practicing with it.

This is the same thing 24 hours later. Now named, and now shorter, and now with EWI for the melodic part. This is the first production of the Ephemera Volume 1.

Them other two are nice too, but I like the first one best .. the 2nd is a bit long indeed as you said .. ended up skipping things there .. now listening to 3rd one a 2nd time.
