Yesterday I presented my paper Quantum Composition and Improvisation at the 1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (MUME 2012), held at the Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Digital Entertainment (AIIDE'12) at Stanford University. Here are the slides from the talk. It was my first ever position paper.

Quantum concepts have been at the heart of much of my electronic music making. Mosc and I discussed this paper at electro-music 2012. He understood it right away, and warned me that the quantum mechanical aspects of it would likely baffle people at the conference. He was right! I didn't get any questions at the end of my talk, although several people did talk with me about it in useful ways during the break. Always out in left field, I am.

The workshop itself was quite interesting, the demos were good, and I look forward to reading the proceedings. If anybody sees a paper posted on the workshop's program page that they'd like to read, I can PM it to you.

Thanks for the read, Jan Very Happy I hope to spend some time over the next year going from "projects that inspired this paper" to "a project driven by this paper," in a more formal way.

For myself, at least, this whole notion of collapsing a higher dimensional musical-intent space to a lesser dimensional performance medium, and then back up into a higher dimensional musical-intent space inside a listener-or-collaborator (human or machine), with feedback cycles among the quantum collaborators, gives me all kinds of seeds for ideas for improvisational software tools. Building some of that and having concrete examples to play and show would help make this clearer.

I may have to PM Bachus after I do something concrete with this. I think he'd be interested.

It has some relevance to zero-input mixer, specifically. As I understand it, the noise generated by the mixer's transistors, that is then filtered and otherwise modified in the feedback loop, is a quantum effect called elastic tunneling, for which, according to that link and other articles from 2009, the models in use for years are wrong. Imagine that, the basic noise model for transistors is wrong after all these years! The quantum is indeed strange.
