Reduce noise by layering sounds

I've read about software that will reduce noise in an image by layer several images of the same scene and average them together. I've searched for the same thing for audio but come up with nothing.

Has anyone tried this, anyone created a utility for this that you know about?

I tried manually creating a stereo file of two noisy drum machine bass drum hits by trying to align them as best as I could. Then I opened it in virtualdub and used the audio plugin for centre 'keep' that it has and it worked quite well and didn't have the pumping effect that using the sound-forge noise print way of reducing noise did. Seems like something worth having but can't find any discussion on it other than for images.

Shot in the dark I think, but may as well ask.
