New Headphones: Shure SRH440 |
 |
|
I just ordered a set of Shure SRH440 headphones. I'll review them here after I've used them awhile.
Since moving to Oregon I no longer have a music room. My "studio" now is a corner of the main room in a one-bedroom apartment. I can't properly use my speakers here. I've been trying to create and mix music with a collection of old headphones and having lots of problems. I need new studio "cans" with a flat frequency response. After some research, the 440s should work well.
I would be sad about seldom being able to crank my speakers up, but headphones have opened up some old-new possibilities. Some of my music sounds better on headphones. Well, at least some of my corny stereo tricks are more obvious that way.
I'm excited about the new phones. There are undoubtedly headphones out there with an even flatter frequency response than the 440s but probably not in my budget range. My ears are 61 years old and can only hear blatant differences. Anyone know where I can get some new ears? _________________ AEJOTZ is pronounced "A-Jotz"

Well, it is really sad to read that your move has resulted in the loss of a good music room/studio.
My circumstance has been the opposite. After having spent most of my life living in city/urban places where having the use of a good music room/studio was just not possible, I retired in 2007 and moved to a home in a very rural area. So now I can finally crank up my speakers without worrying about disturbing anyone.
But, IMO, I was still able to mix my earlier recordings at low volume using speakers with acceptable results.
I *once* tried to mix a recording one night using Sony MDR-7506 headphones, only to discover the next day that the effort was a total waste of time. The headphone mix sounded horrible when played back through speakers. I have never used headphones for mixing since then.
So, at the very least I would recommend that you still use speakers as much as possible for mixes, even if only at low volume.

I wish I knew. After 58 years of (ab)use, I sure need a new pair. _________________ varice |

OK, I've had the new headphones for a week and mixed three tunes with them. I love them!
[Veteran DIY recording artists know that you need flat frequency response (FFR) in your studio monitors and/or phones. If your monitors sound bassy, you'll mix too treble for most listening devices, and vice versa.]
I have never had good FFR speakers or headphones before. I always listened to a mix on several stereos, speakers, headphones, etc. and then averaged the mix so it didn't sound too crappy on any of them. The method works but it's complicated and time consuming. And at this time in my life I want everything as easy as possible. I want to turn on my rig, create something new, record it and be done with it. The Shure SRH440s are a big step in that direction.
There are better headphones, but they are much more expensive. And most of the more expensive headphones do not have a much better FFR than the 440s (and they would have to be much better before my old ears could tell the difference).
I got mine for just under 100 USD, which is a great price for quality sound. I have attached a graph of the 440's frequency response. They don't get much flatter than this.
