Don't underestimate the power of the keyboard's control surface too. I could have bought another engine and expanded it for the price it cost me to upgrade to the keyboard. But I didn't, and it was definitely worth it (for what I use the G2 for).

Sure, a dedicated control surface would be great Max, but my £50 BCR2000's 100+ controls seem to do the job well enough (except for inserting and patching modules - does the keyboard's controls allow this too?). This has allowed me to have pretty much total (MIDI) control over my (finished) patches on an expanded G2 engine for around £800-£850 (I can't quite remember) as opposed to having an unexpanded G2 keyboard that costs around £500 more! Shocked I could get another engine for that and use the BCR2000 to control that too (if I weren't currently a poor student Embarassed )

Oh hold on... that is pretty much what you were saying. Embarassed Anyway, as I already have other keyboards and MIDI controllers, I may not have spent the extra money getting a G2 keyboard, so I'm just glad there are G2 keyboards for the likes of you and G2 engines for the likes of me. Very Happy

p.s. does that mean you are still unexpanded Max? (Curiousity, not arrogance Very Happy )

I actually used to have the same setup with one engine and a BCR. I personally found it too difficult to remember where stuff was assigned. At the moment I can flick through tens of patches and instantly know where all the controls are. Assigning is a simple case of drag and drop too, and even if nothing is assigned in a patch I can still get to all the controls and even assign them officially using the control surface.

For me this works better because aesthetically I like the fact that it's all self contained in the one box - the sound engine, 100+ controls, patch changes (with names in the display!), perf building, saving, variation changes etc. all right in front of me, labelled correctly without the need to assign specific cc's to the controls.

I definitely think this is worth the extra money, as all of these features are beneficial to the way I work and the music I make. For you it is different, and for the way you use your G2 it must make sense to the money into the expansion and BCR's.

And yes, I'm still unexpanded. I certainly wouldn't say no to an expansion, but other priorities are forcing my money to go elsewhere - 1 year anniversary with my girlfriend for one, she's got expensive taste! Laughing

Don't get me wrong Max, I do miss the feedback of LCD screens, etc... if I were rich (and had space for another keyboard), I would definately have a G2 keyboard (or G2X). As it stands, the BCR works admiriably for me... I have one main BCR patch and a few variations of it for other G2 patches. The main controls (filter, env, LFO controls, etc.) are always in the same place, so I know where they are. If I ever forget the others, I have a quick look at a control list that I printed out, so no real problem there either.

As I said in the last post, I'm just gald that there are these different ways to enjoy Clavia's modular synthesis software Very Happy ... at the time of my engine purchase, I wouldn't have been able to afford the keyboard version, so if there wasn't an engine version, I would have missed out. Shocked I just wish there was a rack version with the control surface as well. Very Happy I would have probably gone for that.

p.s. Congrats on your first anniversary Max... first of many I hope. I would have to say that you have your priorities in the right place. Very Happy

Going back to the original topic for a minute, Rolling Eyes current results are:

51 votes (I still think that's a bit measly out of the 1495 views this post has had... Shocked If you haven't yet voted, please do.)

64% - expanded
36% - unexpanded

It seems that overall, roughly two thirds of G2 owners are expanded. I would say that these current results are a credit to Clavia's modular system, with two thirds of G2 owners going back to get upgraded, or choosing the upgraded path from the beginning. So, well done Clavia. Cool

You can't cast a vote more than once, I guess.

g2ian [ed thanks!] Wink ,

You could create a new account called g3ian [ed thanks!] Smile

Seriously now, congrats on the expansion. Now you can push both Voice and FX on all slots simulatnously. It is common for me to borrow dsp's from the fx area (most of my patches are mono), just to use some fx when RAM gets low.

Like they say, you have all the power!

You could create a new account called seraph1 Smile

Dasz, old chum... I think you'll find that it is Ian that has got expanded, not Seraph, although I suppose he could similarly create a g3ian account. Laughing
