The big empty space in the G2's (and I guess a lot of other Nords') front panel is a handy space to put small pieces of gear, like slider boxes, thru boxes, etc. Thanks to the steel chassis, magnetized equipment will stick to it very well.

I used a roll of adhesive magnet strips to magnetize several small pieces of gear, including an MP3 player and slider box (an Encore SlideMate). The magnets are shown in the first pic below; the SlideMate has a non-skid backing that I notched for the magnet strips.

Both of these cling solidly to the G2 cases (second pic).

Most manufacturers leave some space for other mobile equipment. Here's a picture how a Micro Modular fits perfectly into a CS1x.

It's like these two were meant to be together... Wink

And this one is well known, I think.
It was made by Clavia.

AFAIK what Yamaha had in mind when they left that space on the right side of the CS1X was to add the SU10

All correct -

But the steel Nord case and magnet strips make all the difference in the world.

...which is a so-so idea i for stupid and clumsy people like me. I used to put a QY on my An1X (similar chassis and contemporary with CS1X) with midi and power wires hanging down, over which I tripped a couple of times, throwing the QY onto the floor.

Every time I look at my desktop DSI evolver I regret not having bought a G2X - it would fit perfectly on one, but really doesn't work on my G2...
