Well worth a listen...

Music of death & destruction you can dance to!

"Sorten Muld means "Black Earth" in Danish, an apt description of the rich Nordic folk music the band tills. The band find old tunes and songs in books, then combine them with a modern atmospheric sound. The modern arrangements do not overwhelm the traditional essence of the music, but add a haunting echo to the lore-filled songs. "Real" instruments and Ulla Bendixen’s seductive voice warm the soundscape.

The three musicians who form the core of the band credit themselves as vocalist, sound designer and architect. Their subject matter, ancient Nordic ballads, are filled with tales of violent death, sexual misconduct, and horror. In other words, typical NorthSide fare. The presentation is decidedly modern, often with a dance beat."

nice track, im no authority on nordic folk music so I cant really see the connection but I liked it, to me it sounds like they have quite a broad appeal.

I thought it was an exceptionally pleasant piece of music, and thought I would share. Wink Perhaps Elektro80 would be so kind as to give us his take on it's Nordic nature.

Sure, this is clearly nordic stuff. The melody which is sung is nordic at least. The modern rythm backing pretty much kills large parts of the authentic rythmic phrasing.. but I think this song is cool anyway. I might have to find some other alternatove stuff for you guys to listen to. Hmm.. interestingly enough this track shows that scandinavians tend to create very flowing music.. the groove flows.. you can hear the same when you listen to scandinavian jazz.

I found is most enjoyable, especially since I was at work when it was introduced me, and allowed me to take the edge of the numbness that is tech support, my job. Blah.

The Oofotr history

It started in the early ninetees, when the musician Ernst-Wiggo Sandbakk did some concerts with a choir from Trondheim, named Chorus. Chorus had done a recording together with Arne Dagsvik from Skånland. On this record there was a couple of folk tunes from Ballangen. Sandbakk, who grew up in this area, hadn`t been aware of this material and had no idea of its existence. Folk tunes from Ballangen and Ofoten? Marvellous!!

Strangely enough, a musician educated at the Music Conservatory in Trondheim - who has great knowledge about the music life in Ofoten and Northern Norway - had never heard of the existence of a folk tune tradition from his own home area. In other words this was a well kept secret!

Luckily, a researcher of local history called Magnus Pettersen, the former head master at Ballangen Middle School, had some of this material in his own posession and passed some of it on to Sandbakk. When first listening to it, Sandbakk discovered a lot of great tunes! He found out that this material deserved to be presented to a much larger audience. Then, in cooperation with Kjersti Stubø and Jørn øien, he tried to make arrangements of these melody lines. These arrangements were presented for the first time in the church in Kjeldebotn in June 1994. The response from the audience was overwhelming, and this led to more concerts and a lot of touring in Northern Norway. The trio ãOofoträ then performed at the biggest music festivals in Northern Norway, and in the cities Tromsø,Vadsø, Bodø and Harstad. Parts of the Harstad concert was also sent on TV. The project "Oofotr" had become reality!

The trio name "OOFOTR" was found in the book "Ofoten 1, History in general" written by Magnus Pettersen. In the first chapter of the book, the author explains that the Ofoten area earlier had been called "Oofot". The source here is Aslak Bolts book from around the year 1430.

According to other historical sources, this geographical area also has been named Oufouden, Offotten, Aafoden, Ufot, Ofoti and Åfotr.

The title of the project, "Oofotr", was created in relation to these old names.

In 1995 "Oofotr" released it`s first CD. This record was recorded live in studio, except one track which is a live recording from a concert in the church of Kjeldebotn. This CD-release was followed by several tours.

After these tours, the trio started to look for more interesting material from the same district ö planning to do a second record. Luckily, Sandbakk found out that Tromsø Museum had some material ö both tape and transcriptions.

Nearly six years went on before the next CD was ready.

After a long period of recording ö lasting more than three years ö the new CD "oofotr II: world ambient" was finally released in February 2001, on the record company "Heilo/Grappa".

On "oofotr II" Sandbakk, Øien and Stubø have, in cooperation with Arve Furset, created all new material based on small melody pieces from these old folk tunes. Here the melodies are not "in front" or very easy to recognize, and many different forms of new technology has been used during the recording.

This CD may be put under the label "World Music", but the music is clearly also related to other forms of contemporary music, such as Ambient and Trance. The use of samples, loops and programming added a new dimension to the music and has hopefully made the result very exiting!

Actually, the same drummer is playing on several of my tracks too. Excellent guy! Too bad he is spending so much time doing jazz.
