Real adopts Apple´s AAC scheme |

Real Networks has announced that its online music store will provide downloads in the same AAC format that Apple uses for its market-leading iTunes Music Store.
The decision is an attempt to ensure that the downloads market does not become dominated by Microsoft's proprietary WMA format.
As Real's senior VP of marketing Dan Sheehan explained, 'We think the momentum Windows Media Audio appeared to have in this space will be greatly slowed by the adoption of AAC.'
The format is supported in recently released RealPlayer10 for Windows, which includes access - in the US - to the RealPlayer Music Store. The software also continues to support other formats, including RealAudio, WMA and MP3.
Real is also supplying SDKs and codecs that enable developers to embed Helix digital rights management technology in AAC files.
'Incorporating support for RealAudio 10 with AAC and Helix DRM provides consumers with more choice and ability to legally download music...without compromising a high fidelity music experience,' said Nagesh Pabbisetty, Real's VP consumer products and support.

It just might. It would in that case be just another typical Apple stunt.
Like.. they lowered the price on the excellent WebObjects thingie.. practically for free.. great product.. and they are great at delivivering SDKs for whatever tech they are developing. That said.. their streaming server is pretty much an open thing.. and developers can build whatever then want into that engine.
i guess they will announce some of this soon. There will be this Apple Enterprise Computing event pretty soon. In February I think. They will probably announe the X-grid in a better way.. they pretty much did not mention that one at all at the last keynote.
