I've been browsing a bit through electro-music as well for some time now, and must say I don't know yet what exactly to think.
Ok, some thoughts & observations & questions & stuff, and I'll post this in the Clavia forum at electro-music as well.
It would be a good thing in my opinion to separate the NM Classic from the G2, as I forsee more and more complaints on this list from people mainly interested in the NM Classic about people not marking their G2 mail with [G2] (and it's so easy to forget indeed).
The presentation issue you mentioned, with mp3's and graphics, is not the only advantage I see. It could also be a good way to archive patches.
The Forum already has an interface in which one can see the new postings since last login http://electro-music.com/forum/search.php?search_id=newposts.
What I have not discovered sofar is a way to see only the last postings in a certain sub-tree of the forum, for instance the sub-tree containing all patches (which actually would be four sub-trees where it maybe should be just one).
Now if an interface would be available to find all new contributions to the patch area, would that solve the problem mentioned by Saskia ?
What is already present is that when you go to http://electro-music.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=43 you can easily see the Clavia related subforums that have new postings (since last login). Just watch the orange colored folders. But indeed the way it works now makes it hard to find just the posts you didn't have a look at yet, one is pointed to the last mail in the thread it seems - or did I get that wrong ?
Having said al this, I'm not sure as to whether the 'new' information is always correct (or what I want it to be). I get the impression that I have to acctively log out and log in again to see the true situation.
Another possibility of the forum is the subscription service, I didn't try this but it should be possible to subscribe to certain sub-forums and be informed by email when something happened.
The forum seems to have a very capable search mechanism which seems to make it possible for well informed third parties to create 'interesting' queries on the forum and place them on a website, or in a special sub-forum on electro-music itself. Is this search interface documented somewhere ?

I answered this on the NM mailing list and am copying that here for completeness.

There can be a separate sub-forum for the classic.

There are also "view posts since last visit" links on many of the forum pages.

The organization scheme can be adjusted. Posts and topics can be moved to other forums pretty easilly.

This isn't really that hard to do. I can set up some links to do those listings. This is a good suggestion. It's much like the "view posts since last visit". It would be something like "view the most recently submitted patches". New ones would be orange.

Well, once you try it a few times, you get the hang of it. There are both links to the the first post in a topic and the last.

No, you don't have to log out because after you read a topic, it turns from Orange to White (or Grey). You have hit on a problem with the software, however. Sometimes when the browser crashes or your link to the internet dies, you are logged out and when you return, you loose track of the posts that you've seen. There is a fix for this which stores the information in a database for every user and every post, but it changes the way the "view posts since last visit" link works. I will on this in short order.

Yes, there is this feature. It's a mod, or add-on to the forum software. I need to install it, but I think I'll fix the above problem first.

The search feature is quite good, the documentation is here http://www.phpbb.com/support/guide/#section4_5
Thanks for the excellent feedback. |
