electro-music 2008 Subject description: Possible dates |

It's probably too soon to talk about 2008 at the CAC. But I notice that the first full weekend in June is 6, 7, and 8, The previous weekend starts on Friday May 30 and ends on Sunday, June 1. Please announce which weekend it will be as soon as you know it. I don't want some band gig to interfere with electro-music like it almost did this year.

Ok, you'll be the first to know. I wonder if people have a strong preference.
I'll edit your post and make it a poll... _________________ --Howard

Advice |

If we hold it on the weekend of May 30 -June 2, it is likely to be a few degrees cooler. I live in the area and that time of year it goes from cool to hot in a flash, so a week's difference could mean a few degrees difference. |

Is it an outdoor or indoor event? Is there camping? If not, is there 'lodging'?
Never been there before, hoping to go. I wonder what the price is? _________________ The most important gear is the brain behind the instrument. |

electro-music 2005, 06 & 07 were held at the Cheltenham Art Center or CAC and was an indoor event. They do not have any camping grounds, and there none that I know of nearby. There are a couple of passable motels nearby. But this year, the CAC is probably not going to be our host, though I expect the event will still be held indoors. With all the equipment, two stages and a jam room, the logistics of it's being an outdoors event is staggering, not to mention rain, and or dew and electrical equipment.
The cost in the past has been around $50 for a three day pass, and I think it was $57 for a three day meal ticket that was good for two meals a day. As there are no restaurants nearby, a meal ticket is/was almost mandatory. |

Do you think it will be held in the Philly/burbs area? If it is in some other city, I probably wouldn't go. _________________ The most important gear is the brain behind the instrument. |

If you can recommend an alternate place to Howard and Greg, I'm sure that they'd look into it.
The place that so far looks like a possibility is in Allentown. Considering that Greg lives up in the Poconos and Howard is in the Lehigh Valley, they had a loooooong way to drive to get to their own event for the past three years! I hope an Allentown location won't deter you from coming. It's such a great event! _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------

I hope they can find a place in Phila too as I don't travel well, especially an overnight thing and commuting that far for three days is probably not possible for me.
However, I have looked in the Phila area and not found anything. Though I did NOT try the the music departments of any colleges or universities. I think in a few days, I'll start looking again. Better to have a choice than not.
It would be a shame to move to another city than Phila at this point because we would probably lose all or most of the local attendees. |

any places in the burbs? Montgomery county community college?
Does it have to be a college?
I guess places like convention centers are out? Like Valley Forge conv. ctr? (probly too expensive?) _________________ The most important gear is the brain behind the instrument. |

Maybe for a single day I'd come. Do they sell 'single day' passes?
Then there's also NEARfest in Allentown in the same month. A lot to have on your plate, financially too. _________________ The most important gear is the brain behind the instrument. |

A lot to have on your plate, financially too. | Well, I go to NEARfest (Bethlehem/Lehigh Valley), ROSfest (previously in Phoenixville, this year in Glendale), electro-music, Different Skies in Arizona, and Ricochet Gathering (all over the US and Europe). I guess that I'm in the minority. I think nothing of going to Philly or NYC for such great events. I go to Philly all the time for The Gatherings and The Gate. I go to Metuchen, NJ for New Jersey Proghouse. From the Lehigh Valley, I commuted to electro-music each day in 2005 and 2007 plus two extra days in 2005 to schlep gear. (In 2006, the Ricochet Gathering was in Italy. Since I'd been to Philly once or twice before , I went to Italy for the novelty of it!) So when people from Philly talk about Allentown being far away, well, I'm afraid that I have to disagree if the event is special enough. Certainly, electro-music is that special in my estimation. _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------

I live just a bit south of Allentown. I attended all three days in 2006 and 2007. Well worth the trip to Cheltenham! As long as the event is held within the region, I'll do my best to attend.
Could someone elaborate about NEARfest? |

Not all of us have the financial resources to travel world wide for music, no matter how great. And I for one, though definitely in the minority, don't have the physical resources either.
That's why electro-music was a serendipity, a gift from God, for me. As much as I would like to see electro-music happen in my back yard (so to speak) forever, I know that that is not a realistic expectation.
But come Monday, I'll do a bit more looking in the Phila area anyway. |

guys, major cities are a heck of a lot easier for people to fly in.
I don't know how to connect from PHL to Allentown, other than by Enterprise Car Rental (or your fav rentalco), which means a lot of extra time.
And yes, some of us overseas would consider coming, if just to work the show and serve meals. I'm not proud.

...i'm sorry to hear about the loss of the venue...it was just about perfect.
i'd say look at a college campus (venue and dorm room lodging), or maybe a campground with cabins and a lodge of some kind....maybe hold it a few weeks earlier and rent a summercamp before the season starts.
i know a place out our way that has a huge clearing in the woods, could easily handle the numbers, cheaply rented for such an event, and we could do whatever we wanted...but there is no indoors.
...i'll keep thinking about it.

I think we went through Washington <something> International Airport & then on with a small plane, like max 20/30 passengers, to Allentown - but it's been a few years. It was fun actually, flying around the thunderstorms developing _________________ Jan

The airport in Allentown is called Lehigh Valley International Airport. It is a joy to fly in and out of. Not too big, not too small. Parking is very convenient. |

Although I haven't updated the page in a month or so, there are links to these events. The Gatherings feature electronic music such as you'd hear on my radio show and the Gate is a little bit more off the wall. _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------

As much as I would like to see electro-music happen in my back yard (so to speak) forever, I know that that is not a realistic expectation. | Well, ignoring my extremism of going to the nationwide and international events, that still leaves dozens of "car trips" in PA/NJ/NY in the 80 mile diameter range that most people can afford in terms of finances and time, even with today's $3/gallon gas prices. Perhaps it's a PA thing. They just seem to be far less willing to go to events than I'd imagine. Being an Ohio-born guy who moved here in 1992, this no-travel attitude has always surprised me. (I'll spend 45 to 60 minutes crossing town just to go to a band rehearsal, too!) abwajdyk wrote: | But come Monday, I'll do a bit more looking in the Phila area anyway. | Every little bit helps. _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------

That's 80 cents a liter!
We pay 1.79 a liter ($6.78 Gallon) here.
