hi everyone.
I'm a newbie at this board, but wanted to beg for feedback.

http://www.fatmember.com:80/jamroom/play.php?band_id=68&song_id=196&mode=song_hifi

http://www.fatmember.com:80/jamroom/download.php?band_id=68&song_id=196&mode=song_hifi

this is Squarepusher style D&B, with a balkan theme. the download is loud and brassy, so you better ride the fader.

thanks!

hi

Squarepusher...he's the reason i bought a sampler and a drum machine.

he does not overlap the crazy stuff like you did. most of the time it's mono execute playback, all the samples are cutting each other out and sometimes he layers two break. your main break is excellent but you don't make it grow and grow. Otherwise i think you're mastering a lot of think. How do you make a synth stutter like that. tell me, don't tell me...

Not a big fan of squarepusher (though admittedly I've only heard blurbs off Amazon.com), but I like this one. You pull off the Balkan-cum-Zappa thematics quite well. What I really like about all your work is your attention to the electronics & mixing. Excellent - particularly the way you arrange your samples so that they support both the rhythm and timbral spectrum at the same time. Instead of just laying them on, you make them integral. Very cool. farao thumleft

hey michael. good to see you over here.

i do all my editing, everything, actually in Pro Tools, so what you hear stuttering might be samples that i've clipped to the 16th note or less, alternating with space. in another case (at 1:12, i mixed the whole track down, and fed the result to a synth/sampler, and then modulated it with a fast square wave)

thanks for the compliments, michael, I hadn't realized how deply ingrained Zappa is to my out-style composition, but i love him very much. That timbral/tonal thing, I got as an idea from sendy. If you have any suggestions, i am just eating them up at this point.

-jeff h suggested i mess with the bass a bit. that was a really good idea, and the piece is changing much for the better. i'll post a remix in maybe a week.

that can't be true! what about the stuff on ultravisitor (trax #4, #5, #11)
where there's obviously stereo stuff flying all over the place? AND, he does some kinds of bandpass/chorus texture to make his stuff more see-through. that's what it sounds like to me, at least. he has way more than one layer. maybe his old stuff was different... i haven't heard hard normal daddy in years.

You're right...he layers a lot on track 5...

i tought the stuttering was done with a noise gate.

no noise gate-i do a lot of destructive editing.
not a bad idea, though. maybe it would make my life easier. and messier.

Well, I can hear it as a clear influence, but you've definitely got your own thing going on with it.

The Revolt of 1042 -> there's ALL SORTS of things going on there. Ears ponging back & forth between all the ingredients, but the recipe is all yours. And a very smooth arrangement of all those different strands too. Sweet!

thanks again! my collaborator/drummer, Deantoni Parks, is supposed to be coming back into town soon, so we'll be starting another album of stuff like "1042." that's why i'm doing all these silly drill trax-to get my chops up to speed. I finally got over the hump of feeling like i couldn't do anything better than that first album, and now I want the second Astroid Power-Up! album to just be totally mind-blowing. These online communities are just helping me out so much for ideas and techniques-and i'm just greedily devouring both new sounds and good advice!

so here's the latest mix of that song. it's gotten crazier, if you can believe that.

comments always appreciated, good and bad

Scott, great track. I like it. The Balkin theme is quite original in this kind of stuff. I agree that there are a lot of Zappa-like elements in this music. Also, there is Zappa-like fun. That said, this isn't Zappa. You have a clever originality all your own. Technically it is quite impressive. Bravo!!!

salut bounce too much coffee thumb up surprise well done well-done cheers
