Well, it looks fascinating! Well done! I wonder what kind of structures people will build with it? It seems to fit in with the current circuit-bending craze too (though it's not that, of course, it's a from-scratch build).

I do think a lot of younger synthesists who've maybe only grown up with softsynths are now looking towards hardware.

What do other people think about that? Am I right or wrong?

I'm an older synthesist who grew up on hardware modulars and is now looking towards softsynths. It's with the help of a lot of younger people, I must add.

It's not either/or. It's what is appropriate at the moment, and what seems fun.

Ahh, interesting!

I agree. There are some softsynths, like Absynth and Albino, that I've found inspirational and had great fun with. Then there are others that I've found pretty pedestrian and grey. The same variation as I've found in hardware synths.

I tend to vacillate from album to album. Currently, I'm on a hardware jag and I'm using Logic Pro just to record audio, I synthesize and sequence everything externally. Maybe that'll change on the next album?

Horses for courses, innit? thumb up

I have always found Reaktor to be pretty inspiring, not really the building of stuff but the use of ensembles made by NI and the community.

Oh yeah, deffo! I've got some lovely sounds out of Reaktor. Again, I haven't innovated, I've used the ensembles other people have made.

I tried making my own modular in Reaktor but I got bored and gave up... Embarassed

Here is the link for EChucK:

http://www.freedomodds.com/music/echuck/

EChuck is a baby right now but we all hope it will develop into a kewl micro-mini synth like lunettas only more! I have the first circuit boards in my hot little hands and will mail them to whoever wants to werk on the project. I'm working with a guy in England who will participate in the project, so we'll see where that goes. EChucK! EChucK! EChucK!

It was a nice article but I was saddened by the omission of Serge Modular and their manufacturer, Sound Transform Systems, even though there are a lot more Serge systems out there than Buchla. Serge is one of the longest continuously-produced modular systems - available since the 70's. Recently there was a huge campaign on the web to launch their new M-class series.
Plenty of info here:
http://www.serge-fans.com/
...as well as all my dedicated pages:
http://carbon111.com/serge_index.html

Oakly is also conspicuous by their absense as is Wiard - and these are not johnny-come-lately but long-existing companies with popular lines.
...and highly-visible newcomers like STG and Bug Brand have been overlooked as well. Technosarus is in there but I don't even think they're in business anymore...

Even a visit to the well-known http://modularsynth.com/ would have given a nice overview of currently available manufacturers and formats.

Another huge online resource for all-things-modular are the muffwiggler forums, where many of the manufacturers run their own sub-forums: http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/

Sad

Best Regards, James

Sorry to have saddened you, James. Sad

As a newcomer to the modular world, I wrote about what I came across. The coverage of manufacturers in the article never claimed to be encyclopaedic, just a very personal perspective which would hopefully encourage other beginners to explore further.

By the way, I was going to leave Technosaurus out but they emailed my editor saying they were still manufacturing modulars.

Well, I finally got the software together and invested the time into learning how to program the dsPIC chips. It took like two solid days of reading and tutorials before I could write my first program, which just outputs a square wave.

I also figured out how to cut up my EChucK boards into little bitty boards so they can now be populated and wired up and programmed. I ended up making a sort of makeshift tablesaw out of a Dremel tool to do that.

I've posted to a guitar forum about EChucK yesterday and some interesting applications popped up. One of the moderators there said he would like to contribute some funds and testing time if I would make a Matt Belamy of Muse style fuzzbox out of EChucK boards. So now we're prototyping in ChucK with the plan of converting whatever works in ChucK to EChucK in the form of a little bitty pedal box.

So it looks like right now the direction of EChucK is guitar synths. In fact, the fuzz he's interested in is typically done with a synth. Anyway, that's an EChucK update, we now return you to your regular modular thread...

Hehe, yeah well it helps to be unemployed! I'm constrained by a tight budget, but that just means that I need to make the most of what resources I do have. I have learned SO much from electro-music in the past year and a half! We really have a great forum here, as you have commented earlier.

Yep! I've checked out many other places and not bothered with them. EM rules! Cool
