graphics on front panels Subject description: print it on and put some chemicals on it to release |

Hi all,
I was watching "how it's made" on discovery channel and there was 10 minute demonstration of making public clocks. And the way they did numbers, dots for minutes and all that graphics amazed me. First it was printed on some kind of paper in mirror and put on aluminum sheet. Then it was smeared with some kind of chemical and that chemical released toner form paper to aluminum. I don't know what kind of paper was it, what kind of toner was it and what kind of chemical was it...my kid was yelling and banging around...
So, anyone knows how it's made????? Or maybe someone watched this episode?
Cheers,
Ivan |

obviously a kind of transfer method
why chemicals? why not just ironing? like press'n'peel blue, and a lot of people get even better results using catalogue paper of a certain kind (search the forum). _________________

I just want to compare both methods. This one with chemicals seems easier... |

hopefully not OT, actually it fits this threads headline, i think:
in the past i used schaeffer and their front panel services. the panels look very nice, and they do all the drilling for you, even rectangular cutouts, holes for countersunk screws and whatnot.
nevertheless you are limited in fonts and graphics and it is quite expensive (even though i do the color fill by myself).
this week i will try the services of this company (site in german - sorry): http://www.gravoprintec.de/produkte/eloxalschild/eloxalschild.php. they do what is called "eloxaldruck" in german. the color gets inclosed into the anodized layer of the aluminium panel, so it is even solvent resistant. you can just send them a pdf. i will have to do all the drilling, though.
i am very curious about the results. _________________

I have used acetone to transfer photocopies onto masonite and similar surfaces.
It definitely dissolves the toner, but I don't know how well it will stick to aluminum. |
