Again Bill was in Pennsylvania and I was in North Carolina. Ninjam seems to be working well for us. This was a pretty good one, IMHO. Editing went very smoothly this time because I'm using a new motorized DAW controller. It's easy to adjust volumes. If a bad glitch goes by I can stop, rewind a bit, and edit it out without changing the levels and pick up where I left off. I should have bought one of these things years ago.

Here's Chez Mosc from July 1, 2023. Things went good this time both technically and musically IMHO. I'm getting comfortable using my motorized fader midi controller with Reaper, my DAW. I edited out a few dropouts caused by Bill and I being in different states, and I did some mixing as though I was running sound at a live concert.
When we are playing live controlling levels and the mix are sometimes overlooked. This is normal in virtually all live performances. Being able to automate the faders makes doing the final mix much easier.
Hope you enjoy...
(I'm uploading a FLAC version for comparison of audio quality. This one if 10 times larger than the mp3 file. Is it noticeably better?)

On September 30, 2023 was the Equinox streaming concert on electro-music.com. Why it was 9 days late is not important. There was some great music by artists from all over.
Here is our Twyndyllyngs set. This recording is pretty music exactly as it happened over the air except for one short "squawk" of about 2 seconds that was removed.
Again, Bill was in Pennsylvania and I was in North Carolina.
We hope you enjoy listening, and thanks...

After a few weeks away, Bill was back tonight for the regularly scheduled Chez Mosc live stream.
Upsetting things have been happening in the last few weeks. This includes brutal murders, wars, friends having serious health issues, and automobile accidents. Playing improvised music, or listening, doesn't make the world go away. This performance, as always, naturally reflects our emotions. Not always happy groovy music comes out; this is evocotive.
We hope that sharing our art and our feelings will be of value to you...

Here is the recording of Chez Mosc from yesterday, Nov 4, 2023. This was Twyndyllyngs, Bill Fox and Howard Moscovitz, again. Bill was in Nazareth, Pennsylvania and I was in Durham, North Carolina.
This one is pretty laid back. Back in the 70's some might call this gesture less, or steady-state. Today this might be just ambient. In the 60's some would say boring.
This last week I've discovered some new contemporary composers that have been getting relatively significant attention. Two are: Arvo Part and Ludovico Einaudi. Their music is very simple, it doesn't require a lot of attention from the listener. It's not too challenging. It's relaxing. Apparently it's popular.
This video partially triggered these thoughts. Watch this if you're interested:
In my musicial life listening to the forth movement of Charles Ive's Forth Symphony on a PBS program when in high school inspired me to become a composer. This is not simple relaxing music at all. Ive's was fascinated as a child at the sounds of parades on patriotic holidays. As the different community bands marched by, each playing in different keys and at different tempos, they made a fascinating mix, beautiful music to him. One band faded into the sound of the next. The forth movement recreates this effect. Some would call this chaos, overly complex, or confusing. To me it was glorious and very moving. Ive's Forth Symphony is very rarely performed, not because people don't like it, but because it requires 2 orchestras, two or more conductors, 2 choirs, and many unusual groupings of instruments. It's expensive. Often it's "dumbed down" to make it practical.
Now it looks like we are moving away from the challenging revolutionary music of the early 20th century. I'm certainly participating in this trend. I'm not saying this is good or bad, it's just, for me at least, an unexpected phenomenon.
In my younger days, we believed the world was going to be better in the future. New was good; outrageous was better than conventional. Now, it looks like the future didn't turn out quite so great. Many of my electronic music friends have lost interest in contemporary music. Some of the more educated ones are listening to early music, pre-renaissance even. I can understand this new reactionary trend.
Bill and I just enjoy playing improvised music. We don't talk too much about what we play; no big plans, no analysis, no therory, no explainations; we just sit down and play. We don't even let 500 miles of physical separation interfere. We don't care if our audience is small. We aren't concerned about the lack of fame and money.
We appreciate our audience, mostly here on electro-music.com. Thank you for listening. This one is pretty tame, but let's see what happens...

We were off for a couple of weeks; life happens. Here's the Twyndyllyngs set from last night. We started an hour early because I had child care duties.
This is a nice set. For this recording I did a little bit of global EQ, edited out some clicks and pops, and adjusted the relative volumes of Bill and myself.
Hope you enjoy it.

Last night Twyndyllyngs on Chez Mosc got a late start because of technical issues so the set was a little shorter than usual. This one is on the non-tonal side, but relaxing if you like sound textures. Thanks to Airlock for helping us sort things out.
I did quite a bit of editing on this one, but avoided any processing that would change to tonal qualities of the track.
We hope you like it...

Tonight's Twyndyllyngs live stream on Chez Mosc is in the can, and here it is.
I was using some new to me synths, Osmose and WaveCloud.
There is a funny bouncing skipping figure that comes in and out through most of this piece. It's two iPad apps. The source is Radio Unit, an internet radio player, that is processed by Magic Blur, an audio mangler. I pick a station that has a wide dynamic range (radio 7 on e-m). An envelope follower controls the entrances and exits of the little figure. It has a life of it's own.
There are some glitches that come at unpredictable times; remnants of the editing process. I can easily smooth them out, but I'm leaving them in intentionally.
Thanks and enjoy...
Next weekend is a big one for us. We'll play our regular time on Chez Mosc on Saturday night, and then we're going to do a set on Sunday for the annual New Years Eve concert right here.

After a couple of weeks off due to Covid and other not feel goods, Bill and I were able to play another set on Chez Mosc this past Saturday. This one was pretty good, IMHO. I did very little editing this time, but for some reason the bass freqs were extremely loud, relatively. I can't remember having to use an equalizer on Chez Mosc sessions before. A low cut filter was an easy fix. We hope the live stream was OK for our listeners.
As usual, lately, Bill was in Nazareth, PA and I was in Durham, NC.
We hope you like it.

Here's Chez Mosc from January 27, 2024 with Twyndyllyngs, Bill Fox and Howard Moscovitz. Preparing this stereo file is a bit different from recent (3 years) postings. Something strange happened to the master recording in Reaper. Usually I record two stereo tracks and mix them down for posting. This time the Reaper recording didn't work. I've yet to figure out why. Fortunately, I did a simultaneous air-check stereo recording. Very few edits have been made, mostly removing pops and clicks.
Anyhow, this is a pretty relaxed set.
We hope you enjoy it.

This time Reaper worked as expected and I was able to mix two stereo tracks. I did a bit of editing and ended cutting out about 5 minutes.
Hope you like it...

We missed recording last week's program because I forgot to push the record button. Not the first time. Anyhow, this week I recorded it on two recorder devices.
This one is meditation music. I have processed it to generate binaural beats through the entire thing using an electronic technique I learned from Blue Hell on this forum. The frequency of the binaural beats is 0.4 Hz. The set takes 57:30.
It's not like the usual meditation music that is pretty much unchanging, but it flows along like our usual ambient music, with changes in tempo, keys, and timbre (texture). This isn't like the usual binaural beats music that sounds like long tones that drone on and on. There are even the occasional musical surprises, but that is what life is like. Meditations are part of life, not some kind of barely obtainable cosmic state that we can only experienced through years of some discipline. Scientific experiment and personal experience has indicated that binaural beats can induce both hemispheres of the brain to synchronize in a way similar to the brain wave patterns of experienced meditators who use traditional spiritual practices.
Be careful with binaural beats. This music may induce a very relaxed mental state. If you don't have time to listen to the entire thing, I suggest you just fade it out and then sit quietly for a few minutes before you get back to life's activities, especially driving. Binaural beats should be listened to with headphones, in ear monitors (IEMs) or ear buds, but speakers are OK too, although not as effective.
I'm uploading two versions. The mp3 one is for streaming, and the wav version is much higher resolution and very much much larger. It's best for experiencing the binaural beats effect. Many people hear a swirling effect. If you don't experience this, it's OK, don't worry about it.
We hope you find this relaxing and refreshing. Please comment below if you'd like to share your experiences.

Lament for Israel and Palestine
After a long unintended absence caused mostly by equipment failures, Twyndyllyngs was able to perform a new set on March 30, 2024. As usual, Bill was in Pennsylvania and I was here in North Carolina. We use Ninjam for low latency hifi collaboration.
I did a great deal of editing on this recording. I'm posting a screenshot of my DAW, Reaper, giving you some idea of what I did. Of course, there are two stereo tracks, the upper one is Bill and I'm on the lower one. The vertical lines are cut/splices and the redish horizontal lines are volume adjustments. There are many more edits that you can't see. Many subsections are edited and then "glued" so they can be placed as a single unit. These are identified as "glued". You can read some of these sections on the screenshot. The two tracks are mixed for the final recording. We avoid compressors as this is electronic chamber music. Dynamics are important to us. We do use limiters though to prevent overload distortion.
The graphic representation of the audio shows pretty much the peak amplitude. One important thing I've learned over the years is that this sort of representation doesn't correlate very well with the perceived loudness. Some parts that look loud sound soft and visa versa. Thus, you have to mix with your ears, not your eyes. Meters, peak and RMS, are also deceptive.
To me this piece is evocative of great bewilderment and sorrow reflecting the recent horrible violence in Israel and Palestine. The atmosphere is very solemn throughout with periods of intensity and numbness, as we feel when we let our thoughts consider what's happening. I think this war may be called the Gaza War in the future; I don't know. No matter who wins in the end, everyone loses.
We call it "Lament for Israel and Palestine". When will we ever learn.

It has been a long time since I've posted a Twyndyllyngs set from Chez Mosc. The reasons are too numerous to enumerate here. Most involve moving and technical problems. Someone once said the vast majority of technical problems are user errors. Who am I to disagree?
Last Saturday Bill Fox and I started the Chez Mosc program almost on time and we didn't experience any apparent technical problems. That is enough to warrant posting this recording.
As far as I can determine, Bill and I have been playing together for about 22 Years now. The music just naturally flows, sorta like a river flows from the mountains. This recording resembles such a flow. If I had to name it, this might be the title:
"A piano and a guitar floating down the river accompanied by a portable symphony orchestra, a banjo and and an ocarina"

Last night was a crazy session for Twyndyllyngs on Chez Mosc. When Bill and I were playing everything seemed to be working fine, but when we finished the crew that was listening said there was a lot of snap crackle and pops coming through on the stream. I'm certainly sorry about that, and still haven't found the cause. We certainly didn't hear it when playing. Today when I prepared the recording the noise wasn't present, fortunately.
This one has some interesting evolution as it flows along. It's amusing to me that when I listen I hear stuff that I'm sure was me playing, but, when I examine the recording, it turns out to be Bill. Conversely sometimes what appears to be Bill is actually me. I guess we have been playing together for such a long time that we have some sort of joint, or mutual, musical consciousness that is superpositional, to use a term from quantum physics. It, consciousness, is in two places simultaneously.
We hope you enjoy...

Last night, August 31,2024, we had a special Chez Mosc live stream starting an hour later than usual (7:00 PM Eastern US, 2300 UTC). Michael Bierylo was our special guest.
Michael Bierylo is an electronic musician based in Boston Massachusetts. He has performed throughout the United States as a member of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. As solo electronic artist eMBee, he has performed with laptop computer and modular synthesizers in the US, Berlin, Shanghai, and Krakow. As an active member of the Audio Engineering Society he has chaired the Electronic Instrument Design and Applications Track at national conventions, bringing together industry innovators such as Dave Smith and Dave Rossum as well as design teams from Moog, Roland and Korg.
He is Chair Emeritus of the Electronic Production and Design Department at Berklee College of Music where he led the development of Berklee’s Electronic Digital Instrument Program, the Electronic Performance Minor and the Creative Coding Minor. Major projects include artist residencies with Suzanne Ciani, Nona Hendryx, Hank Shocklee, Richard Devine, Chagall, Robert Rich, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. He is also active in Berklee Online, Berklee’s online school, where he authors and teaches a course in sound synthesis.
Michael has a very nice Eurorack modular system with a few associated devices including a monome. Before and after his solo performance he explained his setup and his approach to performing. He doesn't use a keyboard or other acoustic or midi instrument. You can see most of his setup from the the following link to a video that Doug Llewellyn took and uploaded to Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/reel/1166123037982445 The complete performance is attached below.
After Michael's performance, Doug Llewellyn, David Zielinski, and I did a little spontaneous jam. I played some stuff on my iPad, David played my Osmose synthesizer, and Doug had a few synths as wall as a guitar and a brand new Ferrous magnetic exciter kinda thing. We didn't stream this jam, but I'm including it here.
It's been a long time since posting Chez Mosc concerts. There are several reasons, but the primary reason is due to technical problems here at Chez Mosc. Many, most, of these problems have been pilot error, but one nagging problem has been a very difficult to find grounding problem with a Eurorack system I almost never use in live performances. Nevertheless, this particular subtile grounding problem added noise and distortion to virtually all of my synths and audio interfaces. Yesterday, I accidentally discovered the problem and the solution was obvious.
So, here is last nights Chez Mosc program featuring as usual Twyndyllyngs. This session is a bit sad sounding, because Bill and I are bummed by what's happening to our country. But, it's nontheless musically interesting, IMHO. I think the sound quality is pretty good because the grounding problem is fixed. I kept the balance between Bill and myself exactly as we played. The only edits were a very view accidental unexpected short distracting noises.
We hope you enjoy...

Here is a belated posting of Twyndyllyngs' performance on Chez Mosc on April 22, 2025. This sounds a bit different to me than previous Twyndyllyngs sets. Just before we played I watched a program on YouTube where a post-Beatle George Harrison was talking about how he wasn't fond of popular music anymore, becuase of many reasons including the lack of exploration and sameness. George's picture remained on my screen while we were playing. After I mixed down and mastered this recording, I got a funny feeling that George might have approved of what Bill and I have been doing for the last 23 years, at least because we are always experimenting, and that making this music has expanded and developed our friendship.
I choose to call this "Lament for George Harrison in X Sharp Minor". I haven't had the chance to talk to Bill about his, but I feel sure he's OK with it.
Hope you enjoy...

Another week, another set. This one is very experimental. This isn't intentional but sometimes things come out that way. As is usual lately, Bill was in Pennsylvania and I was in North Carolina. The only way we communicate while playing is by listening. Sometimes we are harmonious and sometimes not.
I've listened to this several times and adjusted volumes to make it sound a bit sensible to my ear. When I was at Mills College back in the 1970s some fellow students would have called this music episodic. In those days episodic was out-of-style; not cool.
If Charles Ives was still alive I would like to play this for him. He liked listening to parades go by on patriotic holidays with multiple marching bands. As they marched by they would be playing in different tempos and in different keys. He loved that chaotic sound. The 4th movement of his 4th symphony masterfully evokes that experience.
We hope you like it. We welcome your comments; just post as a reply on this forum...

Chez Mosc of Saturday, June 26, 2025.
Here is this week's Chez Mosc program featuring again a live performance by Twyndyllyngs, Bill Fox and myself, Howard Moscovitz. Unfortunately although we did infact play live, Bill in Pennsylvania and me in North Carolina, the stream didn't quite work so nobody could hear us. I apologize to our loyal listeners.
The non-stream has motivated me to get this recording posted promptly. This time it's almost exactly as it was streamed minus a few nasty clicks.
We hope you like it. We can't tell unless you post a reply to this topic, but don't feel pressured.
From Bill:
The file's Description starts out, "Chez Mosc live stream June 28, 2020." That should read 2025, not 2020.
