I just purchased Touchable for iPad. It's a nice looking dedicated controller for Ableton Live. You have to download a server they provide for free. Two problems:

1) It's a rar file. That is not supported natively on Windows. I had to download winrar to unpack it. That in itself is not a show stopper, but it makes one wonder how well the quality control is.

2) My newly updated AVG virus software found a virus - a trojan horse.

I sent the support group a message. I'll let you know what they respond. Until then, I don't recommend Windows users buying this.

I hope and trust this gets cleared up soon.

This is more of a convenience issue than quality.

How big is the rar file?

Rar has better compression than zip and is used quite a bit more outside the US than inside.
(Roland Kuit's Synthesis tutorial is in rar format)

I wouldn't expect the developers to target US audiences only. Besides, Windows isn't the only platform used for downloading apps for the ipad.

Given that there are many free versions of compression/decompression utilities, not to mention commercial version that are very good and very cheap, there's no reason not to have these on every computer.

Winzip also supports the rar format- at least enough features to uncompress rar files.

Now the virus- or trojan, if it's real that is a quality problem.
But virus scanners have found false alarms before.
I hope it's not real, for everyone's sake.

Winzip

Have a lok at 7zip, open source and free, it will deal with a lot of zip / archive formats.

Yep, 7zip has been one of the first things I install on every new Windows machine I get, for quite a few years now.

Yea, .rar files not a problem with Windows. I think what has happened is since XP started being able to decompress zip files , rar's were put in the shadows. I use rar quite often for archiving.

AVG probably did a false positive. I've run into several issues with AVG doing this with legitimate software - seems almost always to be utility applications (in my experience). Still use AVG though the current small business version really takes it toll on the system...starting to act like Norton/Symantec A/V.

this is false positive virus alert of the AVG anti virus!
not the first time that i encounter that with a software, happened even once with a pretty famous one!

I ve installed touchAble server on my 2 laptop, pc and mac, pc gave me this virus alert...rubbish. Can't work anymore with windows system for music, everything is issues...don't like Apple politic a lot but i admit it works far way better for audio.

And touchAble is such a wonderful controller!!! just sold my apc40 last week! Gonna buy a second iPAd Smile

They have posted info on their website. Looks like a false positive.

Scrap AVG and get NOD32 http://www.eset.com/

Its a bit of cash but it is excellent.

I ended up getting a 10 user license so I could install it on friends/relatives computers after spending hours sorting out virus infested machines running AVG!

Well, I got TouchAble loaded, but it only works with Live 8; 7 is not supported - won't work. I use 7. SOL I guess.

I bought a 3 user license for 2 years, and it was less than $80.
