John J. H. Phillips has composed some wonderful electronic music which is available in mp3 format. I was looking over the site membership records and made this significant discovery. (Try clicking on "Membership" on the forum menu on the upper right.) I followed the website link of new member JJHP3 and I was soon listening to great pieces. Phillips is a multimedia artist. These tracks were created for choreographers, theaters, radio and live performances. Welcome JJHP3.

Many of John's works use samples recorded on location, some in exotic places, like China. Several of the samples are of spoken words, some from literary sources and some from more common speech.

These compositions are musique concrete at a very evolved state - very sophisticated both technically and artistically. These pieces are quite musical. There is wide dynamic range and rich diverse timbers. I love them.

For sure, listen to this music. Let us hear what you think by posting replies to this topic.

Very abastract. Evokes the feeling to me of a sci-fi soundtrack. It's interesting how he makes use of unusual controllers.

Do you want a recipe?
Gather a few samples: birds, rain, footsteps, thunders, cars passing by etc.
Load them in a hardware sampler or, even better, a software one
Add some reverb
Add some electronic noise, effects
play some samples a few octaves below its original pitch
e voila les jeux sont fait (excuse my french)

Yes.. I agree. Brian is something else. To me he writes his noisy stuff the way "ordinary" composers would write orchestral music. Well.. I mean.. it sounds to me as if his stuff is traditional music written traditionally.. but it ends up as we.. what many of his fans call dark ambient whatever that is.

He sent me his filmmusic thingie.. the latest CD.. I always forget that title.. .. great music.

The new Lustmord album Zoetrope was released on May 2nd 2002 on Nextera. Inspired by the Franz Kafka short story “In the Penal Colony”, Zoetrope presents the haunting examination of a man imprisoned in the inner depths of his own mind, only to discover the truth about himself and the world of oppression which has driven him to his inescapable fate.

Is that one?

I saw him live a couple of years ago at one of the Gate to Moonbase Alpha shows. Gave me goosebumps.

He was triggering samples remotely by waving wands. It appeared he could alter the volume intensity and the stereo positioning with these wands as well. I sat in the center and got the full stereo effect.
I remember being more interested in watching his motions synch up with the sound, rather than the accompanying video projection. The wands are part of the Buchla Lightning system he uses I think. It was a thrilling performance.

I think if you like John Cage's "William Mix", you'll like John J.H. Phillips' work.

"Strungshut" and "Exhibit B" by The Impromptists are in the vicinity of this type of sonic exploration but I don't know where you can find their music these days. Maybe on soulseek or somewhere.

I couldn't have said it better. Who else is doing this sort of thing these days?

Add light beams, electromagnetic fields and g-force to your arsenal of expression by using the I-CubeX's variety of wild and weird alternate controllers. Each controller is based on a sensor which detects a certain type of stimulus. You plug it into the I-CubeX Digitizer which translates that information into MIDI which controls your gear. How you map the MIDI messages, what parameters are controlled is up to you. Connect up to 32 controllers. A turn knob replaces your mouse, a light beam acts as your mod wheel, a touch triggers your samples, the temperature controls
