THE PHAROAHDRONE: A simple but pretty cool little stereo drone circuit built into a garage-sale find. With glowing eyes!

The circuit is the XOR Stereo Droner by the amazing PHOBoS. 5 oscillators on a 40106 and an XOR.

I made two minor changes: 1. added a photo resistor in series with one of the oscillators, and 2. removed a switch, making the "vactrol" permanent.

Since the box is quite snug, I had to put the pots very close together, so I needed small-diameter knobs. I didn't have any to hand and neither did the local electronics stores, so I made some with cardboard and hot glue.

There's a funny thing that happens when one turns it off... it keeps running for quite a while... I thought it would take much larger caps to last that long... there's a 200uF on the power, and two of the oscillators have 470uF.

Here is a little demo video...

wonderful box, love the eyes farao
I wouldn't have guessed those are cardboard knobs, nice creative idea.
(beads can be useful as small knobs)

Rather an effect here, but since it squeals on its own, i guess it qualifies as a sound generator, right?
It's a present for my friend Karin and is a Christine fuzz, hence the name…
All stock, just added this blinding white LED that somehow flashes along with the blurps.

I posted this on a similar thread on the muffwiggler forum a while back, but it seems like the electro-music forums are a more appropriate place to post this... Smile

It's a (reissue) Stylophone that I rehoused with 20 note keyboard and some synthesizer circuits. Here is a link to an imgur album with more photos and information: http://imgur.com/a/gbNUW, and here is a quick soundcloud demo: https://soundcloud.com/astro-sound/stylophone

Mixer, for 3 in, 1 out (and 1 inverted out as well), with level indicator. Another cracking good Yusynth project Smile I love his projects, schematics, and boards, I'm just allergic to doing any wiring. It makes me come out in bad language.

Annoyingly, I forgot to flip the panel coordinates. So that is why the writing is backward >Sad but I needed a mixer, so yay! Smile

Weird Sound Generator plus MFOS Mini Amp, plus headphone out, switching aux input, and momentary "scratch" button. I built the box and drilled the panel myself. That box might look ok from up top, but it sure is wonky, because I can't make a straight cut.

I'm really impressed by the filter. Very smooth for a simple circuit.

I first saw the YUSYNTH Fixed Filter Bank in action on Alternating.bit's dub videos, and thought it looked like a really good idea.

But I'm allergic to doing wiring, so I thought "I'll work up a boardmounted pot version!"

This wound up not saving me much time at all.

(Yes, wood panel plastic. My panel man comes up with amazing stuff sometimes!)

This is of the back board -- one of two engineboards, with a board just for jacks and pots as well.

This gives you an idea of the construction (and how much of a swine it was to build!)

I really understand what a.b meant by shaping the white noise with it, now Very Happy :champagne:

Gawd this was a lot of work!

Hi AlanP.

Amazing work you do with your designs.
I know what you mean by say hate wiring, it's sucks.
BTW, do you print only one board per project?

Cheers,
Isak E.

I've got all but one 2U gap filled in now. Just have about 50% of the panel wiring to do now. The last module is a State Variable Filter, with VC Resonance, spare VCA, and input mixing. There are more logic modules, another VCO, dual LPG, VC Crossfader, etc. Just haven't managed to take more pics yet. I ditched the QuadraPole in favor of the SVF. Packs a little extra function into the same space, and the QP wasn't performing as well as I would have liked. (particularly in the oscillation department) So it's going to get a redesign.

I guess this will be my last build of the year... other projects on the workbench will take a bit of time.

This little box is based on the "Schrödinger II" circuit proposed by analog_backlash (with mods by PHOBoS) in the Lunetta subforum here:
http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-56031.html .

Basically a pair of programmable unijunction transistor-based oscillators with an interesting timbre and a twin-T filter, all controllable by LDR. I added a switch to change the capacitor in the oscillator pair to help with different ambient light conditions. The metallic green turned out darker than the spray can indicated, and doesn't quite come out in the photo Sad.

Short demo video here: http://youtu.be/wrjFjAE10a4

The panel was from Front Panel Express - The case was an old (and definitely not working!) Jen SX1000.

I ditched the project as I had no idea how to get the panel graphics done. Of course, since then I've built the 2600 Clone, and found a very good local screen printer who does odd jobs for me.

Just need to make a 4023 VCF, wire it up and keep my fingers crossed that it all works Wink
