Apple Computer to buy Universal Music?? |
 |
|
Apple Computer is in talks with Vivendi Universal to buy Universal Music Group, the world's largest record company. Such a combination would make Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder and chief executive, the most powerful player in the record industry.

Very interesting...
I wonder if Steve Jobs should make Apple profitable before jumping into the record biz? I looked over the Apple balance sheet and it looks to me like they could be profitable quite easily if that is what they wanted to do. It may be tactically smart to show losses when the stock market isn't going anywhere. They have lots of revenue and cash. _________________ --Howard

You might be right. -But Apple is going in a direction which probably explains why the balance sheet is looking the way it does right now.
Hmm.. did any of you guys read this article at the musicdish site :

It is interesting, not surprising, and it's also a bit depressing. That said, just because the music business has changed, it doesn't mean there are not opportunities.

The Xserve is a 1U dual CPU rack unix server and the xraid is a 3U rack RAID box - which can be maxed to 14 drives. The xraid use ATA drives.. like the ATABOY series from Nexan and other vendors.
At http://www.apple.com/xserve.
The products are well made... very good internal design.. easy to service.. great administrative software.. solid stuff.
Well.. this was off topic.. hehe..
The xserve is quite excellent for video, 3D and audio... and not only for server use. The main prob with the xserve is fan noise.. but the new model is far less noisy than the previous. Last edited by elektro80 on Fri Apr 11, 2003 7:13 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Still off topic...
Compared to the Microsoft server licensing scheme the Apple xserve really stands out.. you get a full suite of basic server services with an unlimited number of clients.. you save a real lot of money that way. Compared to Linux.. well.. this is BSD down there in the machine room.. real UNIX. Anyway.. just wanted to tell you guys that this is a solid product. I did some streaming load tests. I killed the gigabit LAN long before the server ever showed any signs of getting into trouble.
There are however some issues with the current Apple motherboard designs which means that Macs are not the perfect beasts for absolutely every heavy duty task out there. That is just the way it is at the moment.
I am planning to do some more testing of the xserve with Cubase SX and other apps. But I need to get some U320 disksin there... I am not that keen about ATA really. |

Nothing really too OT here. I see you are really into the computing/web technology. I'm content with Linux. I consider it real Unix, but don't want to get into a discussion about it. I've been working with Unix, virtually all variants, since the late 70s.
Our server here is pretty pathetic by the stardards you are talking about. We are running on 1 CPU - 450 Mhz Celeron - with a 1 Mb symetrical DSL connection. No RAID installed yet, but that's something I consider very important. _________________ --Howard

Everything goes as long as it does what it is supposed too.
No need for overkill. |
