It was very nice to meet you, if only for one afternoon, at least a lot of topics were covered.

Wout- you cut off the best part- the Heineken sign above Kees' head;-)

Yeah, well, I think it's insulting, how could that sign be the best bit? I mean, had it been a real beer like Westmalle-dubbel or something I could've understood but now...

Why did you let me drink Heineken's then?
Surely, a tourist doesn't know real beers in a foreign land.

Well, West-Malle Double is Belgium, really
It could be an excuse to return to the Low Lands, of course.

It's not fer everybody as a beer anyway, it's a non-sweet dark beer. I don' think many bars have it.
I just meant that it would be quite depressing if a beer advertisement would be the nices element if a photograph of your friends. _________________ Kassen |

I remember someone trying to stop you, or at least asking if you were sure about the Heineken selection, but you resisted in way that would make trying to stop you more seem impolite ... but generally speaking drinking Heineken's is a mistake

I always thought beer is man's best friend...
Anyway, I photo shopped it away due to aesthetical reasons not ethical

I wasn't serious about the best part. I put that there because I wasn't sure what sign Wout was referring to, until he posted the picture of Kees under the sign. This was in another thread
http://electro-music.com/forum/post-130421.html#130421
so it doesn't really make much sense here. |

Yes, I believe it was Wout, but I didn't understand why.
There have been imported beers (or at least one) in the US that had additives, so they didn't taste the same as they did where they came from. So I thought I would try a more authentic version, but it tasted the same.
I wouldn't view one's suggestion to not try Heineken as impolite. You would have to hit me over the head with the bottle first. You were the most hospitable group of people I have met in quite some time.
So, is this view of Heineken political, or personal?
I guess the Dutch view Heineken as I view Budweiser. When you come to the US, avoid drinking Budweiser.
Is Gouda ok to eat, because I really love that cheese!
What about Grolsch and Amstel?
I'll have to see if I can find a dubbel over here. This thread has really made me curious (and thirsty) |

cappy2112 wrote: | So, is this view of Heineken political, or personal? | It's a bit of a flat beer, not very tasteful nor distasteful, just "average".
Quote: | Is Gouda ok to eat, because I really love that cheese! | There is a lot of different Gouda, ranging from young to old, it's a process name rather, not a brand. I like the old Gouda cheese best, say like over one year old, most people prefer prefer it younger.
Quote: | What about Grolsch and Amstel? | Grolsch of course, the brewery is here in Enschede (although originally it was in a small town near Enschede, Groenlo, and it's named after that town)
But to be honest, as it's lager, it doesn't have a strong taste either. For really good tasting beer go to Belgium, and for really good tasting cheese go to France or Italy. Or better maybe ... ask Lies (Wout's wife), she is in the cheese business _________________ Jan

It's not that sensitive at all.
Here in The Netherlands most people drink Heiniken. Personal I don't think it's the best beer there is, and that's worth a discussion!
Most sentiments are lying in the fact Heiniken is a multi national company, like the oil companies and so.
Other sentiments are the alliance between the Dutch royalty and the family Heiniken.
But most of all... Since Heiniken has become such a large company the beer taste like nothing, just golden water with foam...
At home I have some bottles of Heiniken, just for those who really like it. Don't go mistaken the beer taste better over here then in the States
Gouda isn't a brand, but a sort cheese. It's made by many companies and farmers, even outside The Netherlands. Mostly the Americans think Gouda is at it's best on a tosti

just as long as no one mentions stella artois, or as it's affectionately known in the UK, "wife beater."
the biggest problem with operating systems (he says after having had a couple of beers) is that it's nigh on impossible to take your frustration on them physically without, say, ruining your lap top. i am having a bad evening.
hopefully i'll be in a position to join up with some of you next year. it's high on my dream list, i just want to make it high on my 'able to do' list. _________________ there's no I in TEAM, so let's all act as individuals instead |

I wish I would have known that. I mentioned to Marina that it would be interesting to go on a tour of a cheese factory, but she didn't find it that interesting. Well, we really didn't have time for that, but I'd like to see/hear how it's made and how they come up with so many varieties.
I know Gouda is a type of cheese (did I just get off the boat) ?
We have a smoked Gouda here that is very good. I don't know if smoked Gouda found outside the US or not.
I heard some statistics that California has less than 100 varieties of Cheese, but Wisconsin has several hundred.
I would imagine Holland has many more. |

In fact The Netherlands are rather dull concerning their own cheeses. France has beautiful cheeses, but the best is, as ever, Belgium! That beer and those cheeses! I want a Herve cheese. A real almost liquid one! Besides Lise (Lies) nobody wants one That smell...

You've denied me the pleasure of standing in a long line at a cheese factory and paying tourist prices.

First the beer. Now the cheese. Why did I go at all?
(shall I bring my own next trip?)

Now I've got two things to look forward to when I go to Belgium: eat beer and drink cheese! |
