jam recordings Subject description: some recordings of jam sessions from the convention |
|
|
I recorded several hours of music in the jam room upstairs, and am currently in the process of cutting the recordings up into segments and exporting them to mp3s.
I will post links to the mp3s as I upload them.
No attempt has been made to master these recordings, so some of them contain sudden transients and changes in volume level that may hurt your ears if you listen to loudly. Please listen to a track at a reasonable volume setting so you know what you're dealing with before cranking it up.
Some of the recordings are beautiful, and others are just a little sad; I will post everything that I think might be of interest to anyone.
Because I did not plan on recording, I didn't bring any mics with me, nor did I record while I was not in the room. As a consequence, many sounds integral to the jams were not recorded, and many awesome improvisational pieces of art will never be heard again. Also, these recordings may be a bit monotonous, as I am playing on each of them.
My apologies. This was my first convention. I will prepare for the next.

I'd love to hear 'm even when I was not there.
And to the forum Daniel.
edit : I listened to the festival streaming, but none of the jams were streamed I think, well not while I was listening anyway. _________________ Jan

I had some trouble uploading the mp3s to the forum, so I made a webpage where you can download and listen to them.

cheers,

P.S. It may take 45 min or so for the .zip file to finish uploading. |

You recorded that much on your laptop? That's amazing!
Thanks for doing that. It was a great idea.
We should have someone do that at all the jams from now on so we can share with other participants.
I was getting ready to transfer my cassette recording of the Symmetry jam to the Boss Micro BR. However, your recording is probably better.
What equipment did you use?
I'm amazed that you was able to record and play on the same system.
Anyway, it was a pleasure jamming with you. I'm sure J.R. and Sisco Kid feel the same way. We plan to do this again next year.
Tim Lofgren can bring his Cosmotron and James Lacey can bring his Frostwave Resonator! It'll be really cool.
We'll be in touch.

I completely agree.

A decently powerful laptop with a good firewire I/O device and a DAW. I used an Edirol FA 101 for the firewire I/O and did the recording in Cubase.

Its not much of a departure from what I do on a regular basis. I frequently mix virtual instruments with recorded audio and often record new parts while playing back a project that has not yet been rendered to a sound file. The only difference in a jam situation is that my virtual instruments are driven not by prerecorded midi, but by live midi input from my keyboard.

The pleasure was all mine . You guys were lots of fun to play with. Next year will kick ass!

Daniel, there is some really nice stuff in those recordings. Is there any info as to who were joining these jams ? And who played what, stuff like that. _________________ Jan

Very little, I'm afraid. My memory for names is not very good, and I was only able to get the contact info for a few of the musicians before they wandered off to do something else. I know Spike the Percussionist played on the first track (he did the bass line that held everything together); JEM, J.R., and Sisco Kid are on some of the tracks (the ones with the saxophone on them [i think, don't hold me to that]); Bill Fox played on some recordings, as did Paul Agemian (but I don't know which ones). As for myself, I switched among cello, piano, violin, a glitchey drum machine, a reaktor synth called "steam pipe", and some reason based distorted synth sounds.
Perhaps, after listening to the recordings, those involved will post here and tell us what they played.

BTW, if you remove the "e" from your last name, that's my last name, only in Dutch!

Jam Recordings Subject description: Who played what? |

Originally, the 12:00 noon jam session for Sunday, June 3rd, was slated to be a 25th anniversary reunion jam for the members of Symmetry
(JEM, J.R. and Sisco Kid). However, it took on a different direction when Daniel joined in along with James Lacey on Frostwave Resonator and Tim Lofgren on a bizarre-looking instrument called the Cosmotron.
Needless to say, we all had a blast.
I got there about 30 minutes late, so J.R. and Sisco began playing on Jams 6 an 7.
J.R. played a Yamaha PSR keyboard while Sisco alternated between alto sax and the Casio DH-200 digital horn.
By the time we got to Jam #8, I finally got my gear up and running.
I joined in by slaving my EA-1 Electribe and my X5DR module to my Casio CZ-101.
Thanks for listening.

Thank you for posting these, highly appreciated. By the way these tracks are not to miss by any means...for those of you who have't listened to any of these, there are some good ones. I have yet to be dissapointed with any of these tracks. |

I'm on tracks 14+19 doing shitty theremin, and I'm on tracks 15 through 17 playing this old fretless guitar(?) that was hooked up to this huge roland pedal...
I guess I owe you all an apology ha ha ha |
