Hi, all

I hope you all had a nice Christmas

In relation to my Hanging Notes thread, today I was trying to program a CC123 command to tell the Nord to stop playing, just in case I run into trouble again. I have a gig tonight! I'm hoping it will be OK, but....

I've programmed an appropriate button on my Remote61 and I can get other synths to respond to it on their MIDI channels (so I know that the button is setup OK), but when I set it to my Nord G2 MIDI channel (15), I cannot get the Nord to stop playing a note that I am holding. I press the note, unplug the MIDI lead, release the note and plug the lead back in, so that I have a stuck note on the Nord whilst I'm not holding the note then the all notes off command still doesn't silence the Nord.

In the synth setup, the Nord is setup to have a global channel (15) and to send and receive CCs.

Is there anything else I need to do to get the Nord to respond to CC123 (All Notes Off)? The G2 manual on Page 128 says that it is a pre-assigned CC.

I'd expect that it needs to be sent to the channels associated with slots A B C D and not to the global channel, but I don't really know or anything Rolling Eyes

The All Notes Off message has never been universally supported, due to implementation misinterpretations in the first generation of MIDI instruments. The G2 may not respond to it - probably doesn't.

Thanks, guys.

I also have the slots set to MIDI channel 15, as essentially I only play one/two slots max in a patch and they split, not layered.

I'd like to think that the Nord does support CC123, as it's listed in the manual! Shocked

If nobody has tried it here before, I'll ask Nord directly and post back.

Do I understand you disconnect the cable while playing a note? This is the proper way to get a Nord to crash concerning Midi...

I think it's very easy to program a Hold function in the patch.

The object here was to create hanging notes in order to test the "all notes off" functionality Rolling Eyes

The manual appears to have conflicting information. The chart starting on page 143 lists preassigned MIDI controls including 123 for All Notes Off, which seems to imply that the G2 responds to that message, but it does not specifically state that it does. The MIDI Implementation Chart on page 153 indicates that the G2 does NOT transmit or recognize the Aux Message All Notes Off.

Right Laughing

I made a patch to check things out, see attachment.

I made the following settings in synth/settings (for an engine) :

midi ch slot A : 1
midi ch slot B : 2
midi ch slot C : 3
midi ch slot D : 4

Global channel : off
Sysex ID : all

Send clock : off
Ignore external clock : off

Controllers send : on
Controllers receive : on

Program change receive : off
Program change send : off

Local on : on

and some other that seem unimportant.

The patch must be loaded into slot A

click the on button on the red module just often enough to have a note that is on. Then click the on button on the green module to send a CC 123 with value 0 (all notes off).

Then there are two situations, the patch as posted does not listen to all notes off, demonstrating that all notes off does not work over the internal MIDI bus.

Now set the CtrlSend1 module to use Chan 1 instead of SlotA and connect the G2's MIDI in / out with a MIDI cable. Again make the note sound with the red switch and now it can be turned off with the green switch, demonstrating that all notes off does work when it comes in over the external MIDI input.

Then I set the global channel to 16 and try to send all notes off to channel 16, through the external MIDI link - it does not work, demonstrating that all notes off can not be handled through the global channel.

The I set the global channel to 1 and try to send all notes off to channel 1, through the external MIDI link - it works OK, demonstrating that it is not a problem to an overlap between global the channel and the individual slot channels.

If you look at the G2 MIDI implementation chart, page 153 of the v 1.4 manual, you'll see that the instrument does not respond to All Notes Off.

Good work Jan!

So, it looks like the table on page 143 is correct in the since that a single patch in a slot will respond to an all notes off message sent on the MIDI channel number assigned to the slot, and the MIDI implementation chart on page 153 is correct in the since that the whole instrument does not recognize an all notes off message sent globally! Laughing

Many thanks, Jan and others.

I had wondered, if I would have to add something to a patch to make it work, but that's when I thought I'd ask the excellent people on this forum who know the synth quite deeply.

It sure would be nice to be able to program in a comfort blanket of all notes off, just in case.

All the gear, including the Nord is in my car right now. I didn't get back until 3AM this morning and I'm off again at noon for the next gig, so it's staying in the car for now! Shocked

So I'll check this out as soon as I can, probably tomorrow before Gig number 4 of the weekend.
