Hello there,

this is my first post in here so hello at all hello welcome

I am inspired by somebody who already built and Buchla-Style-Folding-Case in Eurorack format my mission is now to build a case like this on my own.
See how it looks like and works:
http://www.spacecase.ltd.uk/products/space-case-baby/

For a lager picture: http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/userpix/845_img_0581_1.jpg

I found threads in this forum about people building and construct cases like this but only in frac or 4U format.
But I wanna go Euro!
So now I wanna collect information, links, construction plans, dimensions,ideas...etc everything you need to build this awesome case.
Maybe anyone has already built such a case?

My first idea is to take some cardboard and cut out the dimensions of a side profile build of the case. You can then use these brass paper fasteners for the pivot points:
Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

Once I figure out what's going to work for a size.. I can then apply the side profile dimensions to my real plans and I'll at least know how much spacing I'll have when the case is closed.
I need your guys help, experience and skills.
Let's put together a thread for building a folding-buchla cabinet for euro rack such as doepfer, cwejman, tip top, livewire..etc

Looking forward to chellenge this

best regards and thank you

F.

Some other inspirational images of new 2011 Tip Top Audio Modular Case. Actually, I don't really like the way they finished this case. Branding and decorations make it look like a cheap pinball machine!!!

Well done. Smile

I designed exactly the same Eurorack Buchla case in Solidworks only a couple of years back, then decided I was really trying to clone the genius of Don Buchla, and that didn't seem right (as you know, it's a brilliant design- just like everything else Don does). So I never published it. (despite having almost death threats from some dude in America Shocked )

Why? Because the original design was really designed for the small flat module that Buchla intended, NOT a Frac- which is far too deep. As you can see by the tiptop case, the compromise is that it doesn't look very sleek (although they've done a very good job- and you (or at least I can), can see why tiptop charges $1100 for the case. The Buchla one isn't cheap either- and for very good reason!

Just by changing one tiny litle thing, and you must start all over again. It's what they call in the trade, a "headfuck"! Laughing

That's not my problem! Modules I use and gonna use (Doepfer, Make Noise, Livewire, Cwejman..etc) all have their PCB's parallel to the front panel.
So that's not the issue dude

The issue I take it then is that you've spent far too much money on the modules, and now intend to save money on a DIY case? It's a classic mistake to make. By the time you've finished designing, sourcing materials as well as building, not to mention all the drilling and CNC'ing, you may as well have just bought a case from one of the above mentioned people. And the quicker you have a case, the quicker it's going to be that you'll actually going to get on and make some noise!

(honestly! Very Happy )

PS welcome to electro-music.com Frederic! Very Happy

You are completely wrong. I don't wanna do this DIY Case to save money.
I want it because it is my ideal case and there is something inside my that says I got to do this.
Anyway, nobody belives in me, you try to prevent me from this..
I am going my way now..

Cheers and goodbye

I just found the Solidworks model I made.

If enough people really want the plans to build one, I could do a 'group buy' for the plans? It would bring the price down a bit? Very Happy

This is also an interesting option for getting the parts cut to order. Cool idea.

That is a good idea! Smile

But be careful with 3D printing- especially that size, otherwise it will cost you an arm and a leg! Shocked

I designed this ergonomic table for a Google competition (which I also won a prize for too), using a 4'x8' piece of ply. It was meant to be lasercut and as cheap as chips to make.

I think it's best if I go away and think about this properly, and do a proper job. I'll sell the plans like Thomas Henry does. I think that'll be the best way to go.

It's a really complex design, despite it looking fairly simple. It just goes to show what a genius Buchla is. I don't want to copy Don, because that's not on, but I'll do a frac-rack version. It won't be as pretty though, as the design makes it look more like a sewing machine! Laughing

but it will also take a little time (yes sorry- the usual drill) as I'm very busy working on a school project (I gotta take action, to help change the future you know! Wink Very Happy )

You should have Ponoko laser but the pieces for that desk, it looks great. Smile

I'll play around with some ideas for portable cases too.
