This is indeed some very cool software.

I think it would be unfair to give Microsoft all the credit for it.

"Photosynth is a collaboration between Microsoft and the University of Washington based on the groundbreaking research of Noah Snavely (UW), Steve Seitz (UW), and Richard Szeliski (Microsoft Research)."

They bought the advanced image viewing software from the guy doing the presentation.

Nonetheless, very cool stuff!

Is it that Tech Preview you're installing or the Java applet? The Java applet had a Flickr-something button, but it crashed here so I stick with the Tech Preview for now. Can't se any Flickr-anything there though.

Anyway, this is amazing stuff!

It's a taste of things to come I reckon (although I would always prefer to hold the actual items in my hands, but out of the way stuff will be cool to view, although how useful it will be to us mere mortals remains to be seen)- now that we're going 64-bit. Apple have already been experimenting with similar stuff too. So nothing new, it's just the speed to do this kind of thing is finally here.

Does this work on XP? None of my software works on Vista, so I'm sticking with XP (32) for now.

i'd love to see Apple's video presentation of what they're doing...

I see some cool music video possibilities in that software. I tried to download the preview to play around, but it failed at some point. I might try again later.

Well one things for sure, that mega desktop thingie would sure come in handy navigating around this ruddy forum. I've just tried in a most spectactually bad way to try and find an old thread. If there was an option to place an image (it wouldn't really matter what the image was) at the start of each thread, then laying out everything on a big table to start, one could look for the image pattern that could be associated with that thread. Easy really.

I'm looking forward to 64 bit processor power! (although this computer already IS 64 bit (Intel Core Duo 2)- neither Tiger or XP SP2 is Sad )

Heu? I thought 64 bit versions of Windows (including XP) had been around for ages and Apple was advertising 64 bit performance years ago too.

I'm no Mac expert but a friend of mine uses a cluster of 6 64bit dual core compuiters running XP for rendering so I'm absolutely positive there is a 64bit version of XP.

Yeah you can get 64 bit versions of XP (actually Windows Server usually). There is a 64 bit version of XP (workstation) specifically. It runs on the Itanic, the new Pentium 4 64 bit range, or the AMDs. Personally the AMD is better than the Itanium, Intel really laid an egg with that one. The Pentium 4 isn't impressive either IMO. We tried them all at work, I like the AMD actually.

The Power5 chip was/is 64 bit. I can't remember if the Power4 chip was, but I think it was.

[edit]
Not to say that OSX actually was all 64 bit with the Power5. The kernel is, but Carbon isn't, from what I gathered. Not that it matters that much.
[/edit]

They did and Tiger is kinda 64 on certain hardware.. of sorts.. Leopard ( 10.5 ) is supposedly all 64 bit. Certain legacy code enviroments ( used in the long transition from OS 9 to X across various hardware ) will stay at 32 but these will play fine within the 64bit OS X. This stuff is phasing itself out anyway.

As for exciting stuff, I hope we will see at least some sort of implementation of ZFS early on in 10.5.x.

The G5 was 64 bit, but the G4 wasn't- but contained something called Velocity Engine which made some apps run a lot quicker.

However Tiger is not 64 bit. Leopard otoh is.

But the buss speed between the Intel chips and the IBM chips is staggering. Where IBM were only offering 167MHz maximum, the Intel Core Duo is a staggering 667MHz.

To be honest, there's little difference between performance between XP and OSX on this PC- however, I do have to restart XP one heck of a lot more than OSX. XP also tends to grind to a halt for no apparent reason a lot more. And it's Firefox or Word that tend to give me the most problems (although I've now dumped Word in favour of Apple Pages- which is a great application btw). Firefox is much better than Safari, so I keep on at Firefox. Oddly enough though Safari for XP is better (imo) than Firefox in XP (and its text is easier to read too- due to the font smoothing). When XP works, it's a great OS. When it doesn't (which fortunately is fairly rare), it's a right fucking pain in the arse. Evil or Very Mad

End of the day, all computers are shit. We just happen to live in a society which is obsessed with their use in everyday situations. I always prefer to be out on my bike, breathing air, or cooking for my family etc. So naturally I'm going to prefer a computer that actually works. This new Microsoft desktop looks very cool indeed. Lets hope it does make dealing with these fucking things a bit easier Very Happy

Sure, it's all shit, but it's sometimes usefull to know wether it's 64 bit shit. :¬)

I was just a bit confused by what you wrote since I knew the G5 had been 64bit and I knew you were on Mac's... that made hunkering for a 64 bit future a bit odd to me.

Personally I'm not yet sure what I'd do with 64 bits myself. Graphics people seem to see a great future in it but for audio I'd be hard-pressed to name a situation where 32 bit floats would present a serious bottleneck.

A lot of the time the amount of "bits" of a system seems to be little more then a sales point. The N64 by Nintendo has 64 bits (clearly) but that was dated so Sony's PS2 was advertised as 128bits. Whoopty do.

Well, I suggest reading this page:
http://developer.apple.com/macosx/64bit.html

An obvious benefit of having a clean 64bit OS and hardware platform is how audio and video apps can adress really huge amounts of RAM. FYI, you all like that a lot. Laughing

Yes well that's fair enough. Out of market forces, I've been drifting more and more away from audio and more to graphics (although being an ex-freelance photographer, I never really went away from graphics, I just wanted to keep my love of music a personal thing- that's of course until someone gave me a record deal!).

My younger brother is, otoh, a freelance musician and he finds it really hard to make ends meet. He was teaching, but found that really soul destroying. Now he is dedicated to playing live all the time, but it's bars and restaurants and the occasional club here and there. To stop this getting utterly OT, he uses a G4 Mac Mini running Logic and that's enough for him.

But he has no mortgage or kids, and so music has been veru much sidelined for me, while I concentrate on the design stuff, that I hope will pay me a wage. 64 bits? Well yes- but only if a number of major CAD companies finally port their software to Mac- which is why I have to use both platforms. I don't know where this thread is going now, so i'll stop here!! Laughing

Yes, true. I don't use sample libraries though. My lappy has a Gig of ram and that's enough. I need a faster CPU more then I need more ram but I need something way faster then wat's currently on offer so it realy doesn't matter that much in practice.

Yeah, I know...

I'm not sure why graphics pays so much more, it's not like the average "designer" is any better then the average "producer", but it does. Fortunately for me, having decided that I like sound better as a medium then graphics, I also decided that I liked (working with) sound better then (working with) kids.

The sad thing is that this guy who made his job get that rendering grid (above) also has a son and while he's easily making ends meet he doesn't get to work that much on his true passion which is exprimental coding for graphics.

Way OT but it's schmooze.....
