NM1 producing no sound thru speakers Subject description: help! |
 |
|
I've got an electric guitar plugged into a Blue Tube channel 1 input, the channel 1 output goes to AudioIn R of an NM1. PC in and out on the NM1 are going to in and out B of a USB midisport 2x2, whose usb i/o is plugged into the back of my iMac g5 running os 10.4.10. the guitar cable is good when tested on a cable tester. the LEDs on the Blue Tube as well as the eq bar on the audio in in the NMEditor screen show they're getting sound input from the guitar. I get sound when I plug headphones straight into the Nord. I get sound from the speakers when I use iTunes. I've put 3 consecutive amplifiers cranked all the way up in my patch. No sound in the speakers from either the computer or plugging the speakers' eq/amp straight into the nord. i don't know what is different from the last time i used it, when it worked fine. to boot, my little sister came over to visit to see the Nord and I want to get it working for her to jam on! Only for controlling the Nord from the editor, I don't think the midisport has audio and the Nords cant transmit audio over the midi bus. Do you have 3.5mm audio in on the mac or RCA? |

I'm absolutely sure it doesn't. _________________ Kassen |

true, but when the speakers and their associated mixer and amp are receiving the output of the nord directly, i still get no sound from them, even when i get sound from the same output using headphones. a chain of six amplifiers in my patch failed to remedy this. _________________ solo: http://www.myspace.com/skippyvodka

Right. So you made some oops in the routing somewhere.
Let's go over this;
| Quote: | | I've got an electric guitar plugged into a Blue Tube channel 1 input, the channel 1 output goes to AudioIn R of an NM1. |
Ok. so you are connecting a guitar to the NM.

Wonderfull, so we'll asume your patch is ok and that's not the problem.
| Quote: |

Ok, so that means your Mac is conected to the speakers in some way and that these speakers work.
| Quote: | | PC in and out on the NM1 are going to in and out B of a USB midisport 2x2, whose usb i/o is plugged into the back of my iMac g5 running os 10.4.10. |
That's good, that means you'll be able to edit the NM. This doesn't, however, have anything to do with the sound at all.
| Quote: | | No sound in the speakers from either the computer or plugging the speakers' eq/amp straight into the nord. |
Ok, this is where it all gets very confusing. Just a few lines ago you told us that there WAS sound coming from the speakers when those were pluged into your computer. Also; what is this "eq /amp" stuff that belongs to the speakers? It's not at all clear HOW you are conecting things and without any doubt that's where the problem lies.
If you want to get sound from the NM coming put of the speakers then NM will need to be connected to a amplifier. That amplifier may or may not be build into your speakers but somewhere there will be a amplifier. At least one cable will need to go from the NM's line out plugs to a input on the amplifier.
It could also be that you are using a mixer. In that case the mixer will need to be conected to the amplifier which will in turn be conected to the speakers. In this case both your computer and your NM will need to be conected to the mixer.
Yet another posibility is that you aren't using a mixer and that the computer connects to the amplifier and that the NM sends (or should send) it's audio to the computer, letting the computer work as a sort of mixer. Note that in this scenario there will still need to be at least one audio cable coming out of the NM and going to your soundcard, the "pc in/out" cables are just for editing and carry no audio.
So; what you need to do is trace the path of the audio, from the NM to the speakers. If there is no sound coming out of the speakers this means that somewhere a cable is missing or some setting is set the wrong way. Perhaps you accidentally set a channel (either on your mixer or in the soundcard's settings) to be muted? Perhaps you just conected the cables for the editor and MIDI but forgot the audio cable? _________________ Kassen |

it's a mixer and an amp and an equalizer. it's all in a rack that smokris set up in our living room that we use for everything. it works for the computer, it works for the record player. usually it works for the nord.

i'm thinking this must have been the problem; however, it's too late to check since smokris took the nord and all the cables away from the computer because we needed them to do a show last weekend but i think i was confused about which cables were for editing and which were for sound. _________________ solo: http://www.myspace.com/skippyvodka
