Chat room anybody??? |
 |
|
This may be controversial but I'm working on an addition to the forum that would add a chat room directly to the site. Nobody has suggested it. I'm not a chat room user, in fact I know very little about them. Still, sometimes the forums get very "chatty" and I have occationally thought that this waters them down and makes it hard to read if you are catching up, or if you're a new member. The software was developed by a very respected member of the PHPBB community and I thought I'd give it a try.
I'd be interested in any ideas or comments about this. Also, if anyone with some experience with chat rooms would be willing to beta test my software installation, I would very much apprecitate it.
Thanks,

Hey :D |

I love the idea of a chatroom
maybe because im in "chatrooms" all the time .
Well, if the Software that the php-guy has programmed
are IRC related, then continue reading
A cool idea would be to have an IRC server ,there are software
for this, I have been an IRC Operator myself.
IRC chats can be reached via Homepages or IRC clients,
most probably people will use the Homepage for a chatclient,
but those who are constantly online (such as I when I have the Net )
can be in the chatroom and idle *giggle* and maybe help people out
if they have something to ask
okay, I dont have a single clue on how to implement the chat
onto electro-music.com, but it would surely be a fun and appreciated
feature
now when i think of it, a friend of mine has 10mbit (up&down),
if you want I can tell him to put up a dedicated irc server
for electro-music?. just a thought |

I'd like to check it out as well. If it's php based then probably there won't be much interest in it. Or at least, I find it really annoying to have the page constantly reloading. Have you considered just starting a room on slsk? |

IRC is the convenient option, however, I'd rarely be able to pop in since we block all IRC traffic at work. I'd drop in from home from time to time.
Is slsk widespread enough of an option? I don't use it and have no desire to. Maybe I'm nuts.
http://www.staticbeats.com has a non-irc chat client running - it appears to be from http://www.phpheaven.net/en.html (I don't know if he customized it - I don't think so). It works fairly well - occasional lag but nothing significant. |

The program I'm looking at is actually a mod for the forum. It has links to the forum member list so people don't need new nicknames or anything. It seems pretty cool. I can't put up a public notice to the site where I'm testing it, unfortunately. If you are interested, I'll send you the information via PM and you can help kick the tires.
It is a Java application. Seems to work on all browsers, but I had to upgrade my Mozilla to the latest version 1.8a. That's no big deal because Mozilla users are always upgrading, or they should be.
I'm affraid a chat room will take people away from the forum, but at the same time, some of the stuff on the forum is pretty chatty and that might turn some people away.
I don't know what slsk is. _________________ --Howard
