Unexpanded G2 opening Expanded G2 patch |
 |
|
Just curious, what is the protocol for an unexpanded G2 when it opens a patch made by (and utilizing the extra cycles/memory for) an expanded G2? Does the patch fail to open? Does the unexpanded G2 "truncate" and cut out the right most columns of modules or something until the patch works?
If anyone has an expanded engine or keyboard around and doesn't mind removing the card to check, I'd appreciate it. |

With an expanded G2, you still have 4 slots, but you can use 100% dsp and memory on both the cva and the fx areas for each slot. So essentially you have 2 dsp chips for each slot, one for cva and one for fx area as opposed to 1 dsp sharing both cva and fx area for each slot with an unexpanded G2 (if all 4 slots are being used). When only 2 slots are activated, you can use 1 dsp for each area in each slot. Similarly, with 3 slots activated, you can use 2 dsps for 1 slot and 1 for the other.
There have been a few G2 performances posted here that require an expanded G2 to work. When I open them on my unexpanded, slots C and D get turned off (voice allocation is on 0 and in the red), but slots A and B still play.
edit: wooo, 128th post! Heh, I know, I'm a geek... |

Yeah, just to boil it down, the "expansion" doesn't give more DSP power to a given patch (patches at 100% are not 50% on an expanded G2), just more voices. So it *should* be just like turning your voice request number up to 10, but only getting 4 voices allocated. In Afrokids example, his lack of polyphony cut out the voices for the performance's C and D slot patches.
Other than that, it's like having twice as many voices. |

ok, thanks for the feedback. This helped me to understand the expansion card a lot more as well. As for 128 posts congrats, but I also noticed I just passed 256 a few minutes ago...our posting is in some kind of binary sync |
