Hm, he hasn't posted since May, and his site hasn't updated since April.

Does anyone know him well? Hope nothing is amiss.

edit - I would feel a bit uncomfortable about pm/emailing him; I wouldn't want to appear to hassle him over a DIY project. If someone here knows him better, it might be worth checking if everything is OK.

i recently contacted david. this kind and polite fellow is VERY busy at the moment. we agreed that i could take this project over if i wanted to.

this would mean a new start, since i wanted to use different developing tools and whatsoever. and i don't wanted to read this hole thread over again. so i would start redrawing the schematic tomorrow, breadboard it later, and all the steps. that will take a little while and i have some other irons in the fire.

what do you guys think?

i will have to check it out first. i don't want to commit myself to this.

BTW has there been a feature list for the boards? i don't wanted to discuss this again, but i think there has been an agreement!?

I think it's great if you can restart the project.

Maybe a new thread is in order, and this one could be closed?

Personally, I wouldn't do a single sided board. It places too much constraint on the design process. Also, ground planes on each layer usually makes the design process faster, simpler, easier, and in most cases gives a better result. I think for the number of people signing on to the thread, a bulk buy of double layer, plated through hole boards is also economical.

How do people here feel about surface mount soldering? Personally, I much prefer it. I find it easier, and faster, most parts are easier to find in SMT, and the boards are smaller and cheaper. I know it's not popular for many DIYers though.

thank you for your suggestions, oli.
i would do it as i usually do it: double-layer board with ground-planes, plated-thru-hole.
the single-sided version would be an additional option.

I'm definitely down! Board mounted pots for euro or frac would be awesome.

Yes, Mathias, Please take the flag and press on. I too would be interested in multiples in Frac / Euro size.

Thanks,

and please convey best wishes to David. Hope all is well with him.

CA3080 are still $1.29 each; check eeedesigner on ebay, or see the parts store section of an ebay search for CA3080.

Good work Fonik, I'm still interested!

i did mean ,there are 'bad' spec CA3080 on this board and as far as i know there are no smd versions of it,so to maintain sound need those same 'bad' 3080 Smile

Using SMT where available, doesn't require the entire board to be SMT.

Are you sure it is necessary to duplicate all characteristics of the original?

I don't think it is usually worth worrying about the effect of differences between leaded vs SMT resistor packages, for example. Unless there are particularly extreme signal conditions, it's unlikely to hear any detriment to the sound.

Use of legacy components is another matter.

I would think that if people don't like soldering SMT components, then that would be a pretty good reason not to use them, though.

.

Its because this project will bring a pcb with the original characteristics explains the huge demand for pcb's atm

Actually CA3080 ARE available in SMT...

http://cgi.ebay.de/50pcs-HARRIS-CA3080m-CA3080-M-SMD-ANALOG-OP-AMP-IC-H_W0QQitemZ120290764061QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar_Accessories?hash=item1c01e3651d&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a SMT board...

Greetz,

Tobias
