Windows XP now officially runs on Intel Macs!

Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on Intel Macs.
Its calls Boot Camp (for now) and now a public beta of it can be downloaded from Apple site.

Hmm the brainwashing obviously works!

I really loathe Windows XP- but I'm forced to use it because of my work. Hopefully more and more people will finally realise that Macs aren't that 'only good for media' computer image that they have been trying to shake off for so long.

I'm gonna crack open some BEER!

I never expected so many mac users to be excited over windows Smile Smile Smile

Also, I can see another direction Apple will take with this (hopefully soon)...running OSX on a standard PC...

maybe they just got tired of porting BSD over to their old PPCs, and that's the real reason for the hardware move.

I think this is highly unlikely (unfortunately Sad ), because Apple is making money on new Intel-based hardware...

One things for sure- the overall winner here is Apple- as all three operating systems will work on their hardware. I just didn't think it would happen- but it's so cool.

But what I think will be really cool is the OS which now steps in to take the place of these 3 major players. That's gonna be interesting Cool

A proper x86 that will run all current OSes...

FreeBSD, Linux, OS X, XP...

That would be something.

Shame that they don't mention the first two at all. Ho hum, back to the hack.

I wonder how bochs performs on a macintel? Anyone tried.

Or sheepshaver?

I heard a good analyst on the radio. He said users don't care about the operating system; they just want to run programs.

Whatever you think, the stock price of AAPL went up 10% on this announcement. It's on its way to recover the recent 25% drop. Rolling Eyes

Okay. Well I'm a 'user' and I bought Mac for the OSX/ OS9 operating systems- so he can't be that good an analyst!!

Unfortunately I am forced by 'the powers that be' to use Windows Sad

This has made it to mainstream news where I am. Everyone seems to be very excited about it.

I have one concern. Is this really good for Mac OS? If people buy macs and run XP on them - what's the point in that? Isn't there a slight danger that people will buy macs, get the dual boot with XP thing, realise that they're running XP more often than Mac OS, since that's where they have all their apps, and then drop the mac for a cheaper solution?

I am not currently a mac owner (will be in a week or so when my new macbook arrives). How long does it take for Mac OS to boot? XP boots superfast.

/Stefan

Apple wants to use flash-memory in their motherboards to store system files in it. Idea
So, the OS boot will be very fast........... (maybe Confused )

I thought I'd already said why I personally need to run XP. I use CAD packages such as Solidworks, PTC Pro/Engineer and Autodesk AutoCAD. It's crap that these apps don't run on OSX at all (but in all fairness Pro/E will run in Linux- I like Linux very much too). So does much of the software that's listed here in the DIY section- runs on Windows only

If I had a choice, I'd stay with OSX- but only because I know it very well- although since installing Ubuntu Linux on my PC, I'm warming to that now.

I'm hoping that this move from Apple will help people realise just how good OSX really is compared with XP, and with the price of XP upgrades coming out nearly every week.... Rolling Eyes

Oh phooey,- they're all good in their own way. XP is clunky but it's okay in small portions (although the music it keeps playing to me as I turn it on or off or how it keeps asking me if I really want to eject a disc from the desktop or what do I want to do with the disk when I've put in in etc etc etc- really makes me wanna puke- or throw it out of the window Evil or Very Mad You will find that OSX doesn't do that- it just lets YOU decide what you want to do- so no wasting time being 'nice'. ).

I think you will see once you've played with your new Mac for a while- how much fun and powerful OSX is- and I doubt that you want to go back after you realise how easy they are to use- compared to Windows

However having a computer that runs all three platforms is a surefire winner in my books. To be honest all computers are a bloody pain in the arse- I think it's time to go back to working on the land! Very Happy

PS- Get a decent mouse too. OSX works with Mice with x amounts of buttons (unlike the older OS9). I couldn't live without this 3 button and wheel mouse (just like PC).

I don't feel that way myself. I prefer the windows manager in XP. I don't care for the top bar that is open for the active window. I think that stuff should be connected to each window. I really like a backspace key. A two button mouse is a good thing too. You can use one with a Mac but the Powerbook touch pad thing has only one button. I've been using OSX and XP for almost two years alternatively and I've yet to warm up to OSX. I've yet to see a single reason to prefer it. I first thought that because it was based on BSD I would love it, but it's been changed around so much that it's very frustrating to use OSX as a Unix system.

Different strokes for different folks.

By the way, Tom, you can configure XP to do whatever you want when you put a CD in. On the little pop up where it asks you what to do, there is a checkbox to tell it to do that everytime, and of course you can tell it to do nothing.

thanks Mosc Smile I'll try that. I was beginning to tear my hair out over that! (It's mainly when putting my usb memory stick in- rather than a CD)
