Hehe yeah I know its a lot! Well, I asked for 15 to start with and he quoted me $5 a piece (half the standard rate) so I thought that what with the $35 dollar flat-rate shipping I may as well get a bunch that'll last me forever.. I could certainly pass a few on to people locally (UK, Euro)

Boy, I am getting excited about all this ... Very Happy The PCB's should be ready in a few business days! I have gathered enough components to build up two units for testing. I don't expect any problems. Sounds like you will be needing some printed circuit boards for all those complex sound generators your getting! Very Happy

I've been sooooo hectic that I've not read through the full post yet.. But i've gotta wait around at home for a large delivery of components so maybe I will..!..
I oughta start examining (proper) PCB fabrication too..
I think SN-noise excitement will probably have to wait 'til the new year for me unfortunately - I've got two SN94281s coming too (also for damn cheap!)

..hehe reading through from the start (..i'm not even going to attempt getting into Scott's wonderful SuperKlee Machine!) -- I just got a Soundgin chip and looking forward to getting all the phonics out of it.!. So many projects, so little time!

Am I right in thinking the Soundgin is the new version of the Speakjet done by the same guy? (..off topic oops!)

Here is the front panel layout for my SN-Voice without the knobs drawn. It will be printed out on inkjet transparency and adhered to a 2U rack panel. This will be my first prototype SN-Voice with the new printed circuit board.

I will hold off on orders until the first unit is built. The printed circuit boards will be ready on December 5, 2006. I am building the connecting harnesses now and I have all the parts for one completed unit that includes the hardware. switches, jacks, blank panel, semiconductors, passives, etc .... I should have it all built and tested by Christmas holiday.

More later !

I believe these chips are not related and have two separate companies with independent websites. This Soundgin chip looks real good also! Those 18F PIC chips are hot! I am using an 18F8722 for a new design and love it!

Thanks for the heads up on that. I might leave it to see how many actually catch that ....

Thanks guys! It's a fun project thus far. I am sure you all notice that it does accept both SN76477 chip package sizes. In my example, the "skinny" is used and thankfully the footprint I made in the layout program was correct.

I buzzed everything out to the schematic and everything looks accurate.

I am pinning the connectors this evening for J1, 2, 3 and drilling out the 2U rack panel early next week. By midweek I should have the front panel art adhered to it and all the switches, CCA, and POTS mounted to it. Soldering and calibration hopefully will be done by end of the next weekend if all goes to plan.

More on the way, hang tight guys !!

An excellent bit of planning Bill. Well done Very Happy (without sounding too patronising of course! Laughing )

Looks great, very excited to get these boards (ordering two). State Machine feel free to do Scott's Phasor next, I'll buy it.

Thanks man! I can't take credit for the dual package size idea as Scott (or was it Sneakthief?? OR Both did I think) had suggested that I add that feature. I do get a bit compusive when planning though Very Happy Detailed planning just leads to less error and delays.

Chat later.

Thanks. We will see how this goes than I may think about the Phasor project. I may end up starting a web based business selling printed circuit cards for various popular DIY projects and I also have a few items that may also be offered (All original Designs and two of them are already done):

4 Channel High Performance Log Response VCA

8 Channel MIDI to Trigger

Single Board Speech/Music Synthesizer with onboard hardware based echo/pitch shifter

MAXI-WAVE (like a Blacet/Waird Mini Wave) using 16 Bit wavetables with PLL based tracking generator

Stand Alone compact MIDI Master "Clock" Generator

and other items ........

Thanks
Bill

I would definitely become a customer. Now back to the SN Voice let us know when we can get our hands on those PCB's, again thanks for doing this.

I have a few questions that I'd be really greatful if someone could answer please Smile

First, let me say -
If I were to build this project, I'd probably ommit the FM & LFO functions.

I wouldn't be bothered about 1V/Oct tracking for a few reasons -
I have no Voltage Controllable gear (and I'm not likely to in the future).
I'd either build it into a keyboard for jamming, build it's own sequencer (driven by my drum machine) or both (obviously you couldn't use both at once very succesfully!).

From what I can see on the schematic, only the pitch scaling parts of the circuit need 15V.

The SN76477N and 4046 all run off 5V.
The op-amps I assume are buffers for accurate voltage tracking, correct?

So, considering the sacrifices I'm willing to make, could I run this thing off 5V?

Another question I have is -
What is the 4046 for? Is it to drive a shift register for the noise?
I also see it's used as the Gate input, in what was is the 4046 necessary to the Gate / Envelope part of this synth?

I know that's a lot of questions, but I'd really appreciate answers if anyone could help, please Smile

Thanks,
Alex

That's a strange thing to omit, seeing as the LFO is built-in to the SN chip; plus the LFO section gives you full control over the PWM that Thomas Henry added to the circuit.

Are you trying to save money? Or time?

If it's the former, than you're only saving ~$15 by stripping out the things that you mentioned. If you *really* want to cut costs, replace the lm394 with two 2n3904 transistors and the tempco with a regular 2k resistor.

If it's the latter, you're going to be spending a whole bunch more time either making your own pcb or modifying State Machine's by trying to omit the features & chips that you deem unnecessary.
