I am about to fly to Italy and have really been on the fence whether or not I should bring my NMG2. I recently purchased an Odyssey flight case and the NMG2 fits nice and snug. Has anyone checked in and flown with a NMG2 before? Experiences? Was everything AOK? I am really fearful of getting to Italy and not having the unit start up or something similar. Thoughts? Thanks!

I wouldn't check anything I'm not prepared to have stolen.

A few thoughts...

I would try to get insurance for the synth, and also pack additional bubble wrap in the flight case, around the synth, and on top of the control surface. Make sure there is no chance for the synth to move with the case, and that there is plenty of padding for it. Label the case as fragile, handle with care, this way up.

Also, take some detailed photographs of the synth first, with a front page from a newspaper or some such, as evidence of its condition before hand. Photograph the synth in its packaging also, as evidence of due diligence.

A G2 in a gig bag should fit within the carry-on baggage size limits.

If you flight with Easyjet or Air France, without any problem. But Vueling wants you to pay another place.

This remembers me of the first flight of a G2, way back in London... Blue Hell knows...
We saw the gig bag carrying the Alpha version fly about six meters into a container, right before our eyes. Only the rotary dial was broken, always its weaker point.

i wish this were true for flights to the US, but the limit seems to be 55 x 45 x 25cm and the G2 is over 65cm, without the bag

I have custom-made flight cases for my G2Xs, with perfect fitting foaming inside that holds them tightly at the sides without exerting pressure of any kind to the controls. Flying has been no problem at all.

I know British Airlines are really strict... but iI always could manage to find a place in long-distance flights... the only problem is the boarding control, especially for domestic flights or low-budget companies.

Tim, do you still have your flight cases specifications? I'm planning to order one and I don't know about foam.... The classic flight case I used previously seems unable to absorb any impact.

I'm currently looking in to flight cases for a G2 and this looks a fairly likely candidate

I emailed for more info about the case linked above

Its external dimensions are 709x319x155 mm and it weighs 7 to 8 kg

It's just a shame they don't do red side panels Wink

I got this one:

http://www.odysseygear.com/products.php?sku=fzkb31

Requires removing about .25"-.375" of foam in the left right direction but otherwise fits perfectly. Case was $105 from hollywooddj.

i think that The design flaw of the G2.. tgey abandoned board baggage compatobility for to little reasons...

if the wheels would hve mooved above the keyboard the standard G2 would be small enough to fot i a board trolley...

the mainboard has the wright szise..and the 3 octave keyboard just fits...

If clavia ever oes a small 3 octave synth again it would be nice if the keep it handy enough to go inside the cabin without trouble

No. I went to Wickinger Cases, the (IMO) best hardcase maker here in Switzerland. You go around and bring along your equipment, they take measurements and then cut the parts precisely with a CNC machine and build the case. You go around a second time with your equipment and they then insert the hard foaming and cut it to an absolutely precise fit. It's an effort and they are the most expensive, but for me it was absolutely worth it. I've used my cases on the road for 5 years straight, and the cases are still in a great shape, the synth still fits absolutely tightly and snugly in place.

A friend of mine runs a PA company, and he told me (just today actually) that a large Wickinger case full with 100kg of speakers (!) dropped 1 meter from the truck onto the ground, hitting it with one corner. The corner protector was bent (easy to replace), but the case (and the gear inside) was totally unharmed by this. Shocked

If you gig alot, good cases are a sound investment.

Nice website Tim... I'm sure there are fine. The kind of foam is IMO the most difficult thing to choose... I'm afraid my old flightcases wouldn't absorb baggage handlig very well.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 19, 2009 2:37 pm    Post subject: proper flight case from thomann Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

First time I flew with my G2 I bought an extra seat - it's way too big for hand luggage - the original modular is ok though - g2 too long -
Extra seat every time costs a fortune so I got a custom made flight case from Thomann in germany - about 130 euro or so with nice big padlockable clasps - then I got worldwide insurance for it which was about 300 euro a year (but that included a macbook pro and an expanded g2, so I suppose just the g2 alone wouldn't be as much, and really nowhere near as much if it's not worldwide) - I checked it onto planes about 20 or 30 times at least I should think and had no problems - it's very unlikely to go missing if it's padlocked - thomann cases are really sturdy too - never had any functionality problems - even managed to squeeze a bunch of cables, microphones and a line6 echo pro in bubble rap sat really nicely on top of the keyboard - no damage at all - so long as nothing is sitting on top of the rotary encoders there shouldn't be any problems - synth case is like a tank

I have heard about a sort of extreme way of checking in expensive gear with airlines. This was a method used by a professional photographer to ensure his gear got through. He bought a starter pistol (you know the guns used to start races) and then put it in his photo stuff. He then claimed he had firearms to check in. Baggage like this is handled totally differently than normal luggage, it is handled much nicer and is routed usually by hand the entire route to the plane. You have to go to a special place at the airport to pick it up and you have to show ID to do so. I admit it is a pretty out-there method but it worked for this guy and his thousands of dollars worth of very steal able cameras.

I decided it was a bit too risky to take the g2 to em09, so I'm taking the nm1 instead, I can take in hand luggage Smile
