I just got finished with a huge project, upgrading the forum's PHPBB software. There was some security issues that needed to be addressed. In fact, our sever was hacked by a "script baby". Apparently, the PHPBB group was onto this pretty quickly and plugged the hole. Functionality for the members should be unchanged - there are no new features.

While I was at working on the innards of the forum, I installed a page caching feature. Normally, each page view is compiled from a text template file. These template files make is relatively easy to modify the look of the pages, but they are compiled on the fly and that can eat up CPU resources on the server. I hope the new caching will speed up things a bit.

Everytime one works on a complicated software system like this web site, there is a significant probability that something will break. Please let me know if you see anything that isn't working right.

We just discovered a problem with attachments. Our file server in Europe is not responding. This could be a temporary network problem - it ususally is when this happens.

This might be a bit redundant, but I'm curious. Does the European server problem occur both ways such that attatchments can not be uploaded AND attatchments cannot be downloaded from the server? G2Ian's most recent noodle patch is no longer attatched to the thread he made for it and I am thinking this is the problem.

There is a problem. I don't understand it. The European server is there, and serving files. The forum is ignoring attachments for some reason. I'm working on it now.

OK, I found the problem and sorta fixed it. I had to back out the cache. It wasn't working for the attachments. I need to look into that. Thanks to those who gave me the quick heads up. It should be OK now.

Yes, all the problems were involved with the upgrade, it turns out. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what is the problem. There are some more things to do, but the major stuff has been upgraded now.
