About this forum |
 |
|
This forum is for G2 building blocks, or small assemblies of modules that perform a useful function that can be used in other larger patches and performances.
Since these building blocks are designed with the intension of reuse, we would expect the documentation to be as good as possible.
This forum was initiated from a discussion in this topic http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-5118.html
Normally, I lock these "About the forum" topics, but in this case, I'll leave it open so people can discuss what form of documentation is needed for these blocks, for other general concepts relating to them. _________________ --Howard

At the very least, the documentation should include some information in the Textpad: e.g., patcher's name, explanation of the purpose of the patch, e-mail address of patcher, link to or description of the patch's origins or resource explaining further details. Additional 'Name' modules could be used for in-patch notes or labels. Any extra module-labelling beyond the defaults could be helpful in some cases.
We should avoid adding too much coloration or being too creative with the layout, except in cases where it's helpful, since a lot of these will be pasted into other patches. Also, any superfluous modules should be removed, especially FX, if they aren't critical to the patch or demonstration. In light of this, I think we should specify from the outside when a patch is meant as a building block, a tutorial or demonstration of technique, or as an effect.
There are many types of patches I had in mind when I began my own building blocks folder but we should try to avoid overlap with other Patch subforums when possible.
There are probably several people who have a large collection of 'building blocks' since some people prefer to work this way. However, I suggest we start with just a few from each contributor, with the goal of documenting them and cleaning them up as best as possible, if necessary, and establishing good protocol for submitting these building blocks.
Rob's filters, for example, of which I've patched about a dozen, could be uploaded with a link to the specific page in his workshop or with a link to the main page of his workshop. I know he'd intended to add the patches to the workshop, itself, and he may still want to do this and would prefer that I don't upload mine, so I'll hold off on those until I hear otherwise.
It occurred to me that we might want to add a 'prefix' to the filename so it looks like [building block] patchname.pch2. That's what I've been doing... We could always shorten it to [bb] or something similar if we all agree. I think it just makes keeping track of them easier, but it might be just personal taste and would be better left to the individual enduser.
What are others' ideas on any of the above?

I always thought the "Experimental" subforum was for this stuff.
Glad it exists, though. Now if we can only get "macros" in the G2 editor.
Ugh. |

I just added the FWD/REV sequencer as a building block. I think the way the colors are used is a good model on how to identify what is the building block and what is the demo. The Text Box describes all the I/O and controls. If anyone has suggestions on how to improve the way we do this, please chime in.

this is great. a bit different from having "shell" modules that open a sublayer window (with other modules in its contents) but exceptionally practical none-the-less. |

How about:
1.) are the threads meant to keep Talking short or complete away when not related to bring a buiding block further ?
when i like something very much i maybe like to make compliments.
2.) I know, it is often a very narrow Path between making some kind words or questions and ending in not directly theme related posts.
So i thought here is the right place to ask this.
3.)As i understand this topic now,
it would be the better way to quote a post in the g2 disscussion Forum and place there the Questions.
Right ?
4.) and maybe here just the thanks, ..................... ?
But what when having just little questions ?( and i think i wouldn't open a new thread at the disscussion place) ---> patch a feedback to point 2---->
Orwhen Imagin that 100 people just say : hey, very nice. It is disturbing...........
What is the thinking of the Admins ?
thanks in advance |

I think it's OK to comment on a building block, or to raise questions about it, in the same thread as the BB is. Like you did earlier today with the fixed filter, I think that you contributed to that thread in a very positive way.
Compliments are always OK, and I wouldn't worry too much about 100s of people doing so - such things simply don't happen
When a thread develops into a new subject it can always later be split of into a new one, when such seems appropriate to a moderator or on peple's requests. _________________ Jan
