Could very well be. Although it's not a song I know of them it reminds me on King Crimson.
Mabe CTRL+F for Paris in http://members.aol.com/kingcrimsonlive/kclive31.htm that one mentions some songs I never heard.
BTW and I removed your duplicate message, sorry but it's against the policies. _________________ Jan

No way is that King Crimson!
It's sounds like Pat Metheny, Frank Zappa and Keith Emerson, on a lot of coke and all in bed with each other, while on stage _________________ ACHTUNG!

Or it just could be Pat Metheny, Frank Zappa and Keith Emerson humping King Crimson while on a creepy lot of shrooms and coke? Stage or not.. who cares ...
The simplest explanation is often the best. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I'll agree with the staff. It's not King Crimson.
There is no Mellotron. Only Zu'ul. Or there's a Fender Rhodes with a Small Stone, and a steep filtered analogue lead instrument, of which, in 1972-1975, there were quite a few, even (especially!) in the UK. No idea of the venue huh? I'm getting Moog with a ribbon controller.
Rod Argent doing a piss take on ELP?
It's definitely someone playing prog rock, but they didn't make it out of the UK, or I'd probably have heard it.
Ok, it's probably not Tony Kaye, I doubt it is Peter Banks either, definitely not Keith or Rick, they were already doing other stuff then and this is not their style. King Crimson was doing something else by then, as was the Moody Blues. None of this fits and this sounds more like progressive jazz than progressive rock.
I get more jazz than rock, but it was the height of prog rock, so it could just be someone who didn't get published. There are a lot of us.
[edit]
There is a possibility this is Soft Machine, although I should research it more...
The time and place fit though. Anybody got any of their music?

There could be an understated and ill placed tron at the end of the track. Anyways, could we hear more? Chances are that we might recognise some signature licks or tricks and then unravel the mystery.
For some reason this sounds vaguely familiar.
Soft machine? Or one of the related groups / spinoffs / jerkoffs / moles?
Nah.. no Wyatt in here I think.
Sure, it has a touch of jazz rock, and prog.. but also a flair of that european psychedelic spacejamrockprog stuff. The more recognisable and extrovert stuff like Gong and Magma is well know. This is not any of those. There were shitloads of bands like that. Many were really good. Just a handful or two got recording deals. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

They did go fusion after Wyatt was kicked. Some of the live tapes I have heard from like after 72 did enter this kinda terrain at times. Still... I´m not sure. It does sound familiar though. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Yeah, but SM didn´t sound anything like this while Wyatt was in.
hey I have a link. Those drums! Is that John Stanley Marshall of Nucleus fame? Marshall did play with SM after Wyatt and that other guy departed.. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
