Hi all,
I'm Serena, i'm italian and i do need an help.
I decided to play synth but i really know a little about them.
So maybe someone of you can help me.
Well, i'd like to get the sound of Nine Inch Nails and of Marylin Manson but i don't know which kind of synth can be used to do it.
I hope someone will answer me.
Thank you in advance for your help!!!
Serena

Well, I should say, try to find out which synths they are using. A fan site or maybe their own or record company? I once heard NIN used the Nord Modular Classic or the Micro a lot.

Maybe, but how could you answer such a question otherwise?
Or are there any presets known used by NIN?

Probably the most used synth from early NIN (Prettyhate machine, Broken), was the original Nord Lead. I have the newest version of the Nord, the originals' been discontinued, but it's a raw cutting synth the new one can't match. But that wall of shit behind Reznor is probably used for processing for almost all of his sounds. And probably one sound from him, can never be duplicated.

I'm only familar with newer Manson, since Tim Skold has joined up he probably brought alot of what KMFDM uses. Virus B or C, Nord Lead..etc...

I make industrial-goth. Nothing can beat a Access Virus and a Nord Lead.

That "wall of shit" has 4 Metasonix modules (!!), one (actually a lot of) rather enviable Doepfer modular, and piles of other stuff they aren't telling you about. I can recognise the Metasonix modules though, they stand out quite readily.

I´m watching National Geographic Channel now. It seems these huts made of sun dried manure have no Metasonix devices. Shocked

Seraph:

You probably haven't heard the Scrotum Smasher. Wink

The first comment I got out of my nephew as a comment on a track I did using a Metasonix (Wretch Machine) was that "that sounds like NiN", not that it was what i was trying to do. But yeah, the metasonix sound is (obviously) in the newer stuff they're doing.

Is it possible to hear a scrotum smasher? Wouldn´t your own screams overpower it? Shocked

Wow, he's got an EMS Synthi on the left under the monitor. Shocked I highly recommend a Nord Lead or a Virus if you can afford one. Also remember Trent Reznor also uses thousands of softsynths. Wink I recognize the Oddity and Reactor on the computer monitor on the left. I have the Oddity and love it btw.
I think I remember reading that all of Mansons' new album was done on Tim Skolds' Laptop so suffice it to say that means softsynths, although I'm sure a piece of hardware gets in there. Laughing

It doesn't matter that much, it's all in the mixdown and production.

NIN and Manson (particularly in the down the spiral/ Antichrist Superstar area) are full of putting one soundsource on many mixer channels with different distortions and different pan settings from that layered sound.

yes I'll second that. I'm not a big fan of soft-synths, but the Oddity is an exception Very Happy

ReFX's PlastiCZ is another favourite Cool I wish they'd just hurry up and make it a UB Evil or Very Mad
