This is a fragment of a midi dump, virtually no expression etc. The few notes that should be pizz are arco. This is my first attempt at making substantial use of the octonian scale and I keep getting the feeling that I've heard it all before. The other movements are already forming in my mind and I'm going to complete it in any case for sanities sake. But I'm curious if others have the same reaction.

This is written for string quartet. The final work will be "electro" only in the sense that it was written in Sibelius and out of a felt neurological need to externalize internal states (I refer you to Howard's comments at EM 2007).

Thanks for your reactions of any sort.

Octatonic I guess ?

Octophonic, or octaphonic I guess, should refer to the use of eight sound( source)s.

Whatever the word, the music sounds beautiful to me.

Another fantastic musical passage from Bachus!

Brings to mind the Bartok String quartets.

Ah! Of course! At least it didn't turn out to a rehashig of Korngold Laughing

What I'm hearing of the 2nd mvmt sounds like Ives, the 3rd like Bachus. Maybe I will be able to fob it off as post-modern Wink

In my utter ignorance I had to find the definition of an octophonic scale. The term octophonic seems to be almost exclusively used for 8 channel sound systems, whereas a search for octatonic seem to assert that this is the widely accepted term for the scale, which makes sense. I did, however, find a few uses of the term octaphonic and octonic for the scale, among several thousand uses of octatonic. Octonion, on the other hand is a hypercomplex number. Not very important , I know... Smile

Octaphonic as a term for a scale just doesn't make sense. But the same holds for other things in music, like black keys on a keyboard, using a score instead of a tape recorder or using "octave" for a step of 12 semi tones; it's just plain nuts. Not that there is anything wrong with being nuts, but it does make things a bit confusing to me every now and then.

It's Western music Jim, but not as we know it...

I'm left wanting to hear the whole piece now.

That is the most interesting piece of music I have heard all week.

Very good, this is exciting!!

Really nice and inspiring to hear your work, I read some things about the use of these scales in messiaen's writings on serial composition. It's great to actually listen to these scales instead of just reading about all the possibilities! Very Happy
