James,

It was good to meet you at the event. Your question at the panel discussion was a good contribution, INMHO. It would have been enjoyable to discuss that for an hour itself. I will yield any offers to be on a panel to you. Laughing

I had a wonderful time at the convention, and spent most of it in the jam room. I recorded several hours of jam sessions for the hell of it (available here) and would like to volunteer to do the same for all of the jam sessions next year. I'll bring some mics too, so that people without a line out can still be recorded.

That would be great - we could use someone to record the jams and in general to keep things running in the jam room!

...yes indeed. if 1% of the attendees do something that they see needs doing, it can only get better and better Smile

My first posts didn't show up (?!) so i'll try to recall my feedback from a week ago.

I thoroughly enjoyed the festival and particularly enjoyed the people who performed/presented and still stuck around for the duration.

Suggestions:
1. Hang some banners/tapestries/coth in the smaller performance space (the boxy room opposite the theatre) to reduce the echo. The room's acoustics rendered much spoken word overly muddy and i'm sure affected music acoustics as well.

2. Set up a couple listening stations for the CDs. Either provide a couple walkman CD players and have sample discs, or better still, provide a computer or two with headphones and iTunes. Each person bringing CDs would be responsible for ripping their CDs into the iTunes and then we would have a way of previewing music. I rarely buy CDs without hearing some of the music first - listening stations might increase CD sales.

Just want to chime in to support dextersinister's suggestions.

(btw -- I think dextersinister was the "mystery person" who hauled the subwoofer from the large hall to the theatre on Saturday night).

One of the problems with the live acoustics of the large auditorium was that I had to, in turn, greatly reduce the reverb from my Lexicon unit. This tightened things up for the live performance however the stream might have sounded "dry" as a result.

Some tapestries or draperies would go a long way to taming the acoustics in that space.

The listening station idea sounds good, too. I've not heard it suggested however to have listening stations would likely increase CD sales.

The festival was an awesome experience. Can't wait till next year!

if every single person who comes to electro brings one nice, big piece of styrofoam, or plastic foam, or a pillow, or something i'm sure we could make a big difference in the large gallery. some rugs would be amazing too.

i also like the listening station idea. we'd have to implement some good security (physical and otherwise) on the computers used for it though i think. we left a laptop unsecured with our installation and someone disabled (and somehow rearranged the settings on) the software controlling the whole installation in order to burn a CD. luckily, i learned the secret of a good installation from tim thompson: a reset button. this wisdom is also applicable to the listening station idea (a type of installation, in a way...).

I made a quasi-satirical statement that the more formal classical music education one has the less mysterious and enjoyable is music. James called me on that. James said he has a PhD in music and still loves listening. No doubt, but the topic is worth more discussion.

At EM2007 one of my SWA1501 sub-woofers stopped working. I finally had a chance to take a look at it -- it is out of warranty and figured that I'd troubleshoot what I could without a schematic.

Turns out that the culprit was the main power switch.

Fortunately, the power switch is a DPST and they only use one side of it. Moved the leads to the other side of the switch and it works now!

The other sub had some intermittent power failures however I have not been able to reproduce the problem here. I bought the two subs together -- since the symptoms are the same I suspect that the switch on the second sub may be doing the same thing.

I had never seen the innards of an SWA1501 and I was impressed with its design and serviceability.
