Proposed lodging-for-rides swap available for e-m 2008 |

Update: looks like I found someone for the trade. Thanks everyone!
----
Hi everybody,
This is Jeff (X. J.) Scott.
I'm happy that I'm going to be able to see all of you this year at the electro-music 2008 festival. I will be giving a seminar on microtonality and xenharmonics Thursday evening where I'll try to cover the basics, then cover the physical meaning of consonance and dissonance, interactions between timbre and tuning, and management of large scale sets and exotic intonational systems including nonoctave tunings using various techniques.
I live 35 miles from the Renaissance Center, in a rural area in Rogersville, Tennessee. It's about a 45-50 minute drive from here to Kingsport, most of which is on the 11W highway.
I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in trading free lodging here at our farm in exchange for transportation for myself to and from the event in their car. This could be someone coming to the festival in their own car, or renting a car from the airport. Just one person, as we only have the one guest bed.
Living here is myself, my wife, and our small children. We have an ordinary 1400 sq ft house. There is a futon couch for guests that folds into a bed in the living room. It's not a bad place to stay, we have 15 acres with some goats, a fish pond, and some trails around the property. There are lots of organic apples coming in right now and still some currant berry bushes here and there. Usually we have chickens but neighborhood dogs got the last of the chickens earlier this year and I haven't had a chance to replace them. The house is animal and smoke free, although I do admit to letting kid goats inside on rare occasion.
My thinking is I'll get to the festival on my own Thursday afternoon, setup, do my seminar, attend concerts, and then ride back with you to the farm here Thursday night. Then, a full round trip on Friday and Saturday, and then presumably you would return from here back to your place or the airport whenever you like on Sunday.
On Thursday I'll probably be bringing a standard keyboard, an isomorphic array keyboard (this is uncertain as it has been ordered and is en route but has not yet arrived), and a pedalboard to transport as well as myself and a backpack containing a laptop, notes, handouts, and lunch. On Friday and Saturday it will likely be fewer things, such as the isomorphic keyboard and the laptop.
I know a bit about tuning and scales, so anyone particularly keen on a passionate discourse regarding those subjects might enjoy talking shop, also anyone who likes goats is a bonus as well.
A non-smoker is important since I'm clinically allergic. It's important that you'll arrive at the festival on Thursday since I'll need a ride back Thursday night. It's also possible if one person is just doing a partial attendance starting Thursday they could split with another, for example, one person could stay here for 2 nights (Thu/Fri) and another 1 night (Sat).
I will post this letter on both the participants mailing list and on the e-m forum. If interested, or if you have questions, feel free to email me back on the list or privately at my email address.
Thanks!
Jeff Scott

Thank-you, Jeff for the terrific lecture last night.
Glad to hear of your worldwide success with the software you've developed !
I thought the crowd in the lecture room was very attentive and sincerely interested in all you taught us. Bravo _________________ "Musicians are magicians.." -W. Carlos

It was great talking to you afterwards.
I want to apologize about running over. The video projector turned up late and then was a little tricky to set up and Greg had said it was OK to go a little bit over and they'd just slide everyone back a bit, but then I forgot to look at my clock during the presentation and really went too long and messed up the other presenters schedules. I'm very sorry about doing that.
My goat farm lodging for transport deal fell apart as the person got sick at the last minute. If a nonsmoker who can handle 3 small kids in the house would like to trade bed (fold out futon couch) and breakfast (scrambled eggs and turkey bacon, or grits) at the farm for a ride with them back from and to the show today and/or tomorrow (it's OK to stay here Saturday and leave Sunday as well), just come up to me at the festival, just track me down before 8pm or so today for a space tonight (otherwise my wife has to roundtrip with the kids to Kingsport late at night, she'll leave the farm around 9:30pm). I'm leaving for the festival now, had to take care of some things, will be there around 3pm I think. Just the array keyboard, a bag and a laptop this time, so I'm traveling a bit lighter than yesterday. |

This is probably too late but it appears that purchasing tickets at the door is based on prepaid willcall as it says!
I live in Asheville and was planning on going to Saturday's (tomorrow) events but I don't want to arrive at the door with money only to be turned away!!
If anyone reads this please let me know the deal ASAP (I'll check in the early morning). I may just drive up anyways. Not much here tado during the day and a nice drive it is!
Cheers,

All I have to say is I am really enjoying the performers. Lots of fantastic acts. Look forward to todays music. To enjoy all this in it's full fidelity, I have set up a computer as a "media server".
You can set up a server on any PC running Windows using TVersity to share internet streams, videos, music, etc .... Access it from your TV, STB, game consoles and mobile devices.
http://tversity.com/
http://tversity.com/blog
To share the EM 2008 radio stream using TVersity use this address when setting up your share LIBRARY and make sure you allow your FIREWALL to serve the stream:
http://195.139.191.12:8050/
Anyhow, my Sony PS3 Gaming console is connected via optical link to my home theater multichannel amplifier and is also wirelessly connected to my local area network and is the media client that receives the stream (cool feature of this console). The amplifier is pumping up to 400 W into my POLK towers and a 150W Yamaha powered subwoofer, Pinnacle wide center channel and two satellite speakers I guess you can say I was prepared to do some serious listening .. Oh, to compensate for lack of video projection, I use the PS3 build it video FX and send that out over HDMI link to a 62" HD Monitor ............ Crap .... I am there with you all now !!!! Combine this with the live chat and I am all set ...... Oh yes, I have some neat Xenon strobe units adding a bit of room ambiance for a sort of "club" feel ............ Robin o course thinks I have gone totally insane but really, she is enjoying the music while she sews in her studio
If I want to go outside and play in the sandbox, my Sony PSP also receives the LIVE stream from the server and I can slap the cans on my ears and listen there also ......
Overkill, maybe, but shit, I like playing with technology .... Hearing good music, Thats what lots of us like mined folks like to do ..........
on !!!!!!!!!!!!!
State Machine ..........

It's over, and I think a good time was had by all. Once again Greg, Howard, et al put together a tremendous event. There were so many great performers, and the workshops/demos were extremely good. Not surprising, there were quite a few people from the Southeast attending, and many kept asking me if it was going to be at the Renaissance Center next year.
Speaking of the Kingsport Renaissance Center, the staff and facility were top notch.
I thought the sound systems this year were especially great sounding: the best yet. Kevin Kissinger's equipt. along with Howard's stereophonic know-how created a rich hi-fidelity sound. I think the acoustics of the stage venue helped as well. The second stage area sounded very good as well.
The video graphics in each stage were well executed. I think they went well with the music.
I hope other in attendance would add their feedback here. _________________ Mark Mahoney
