I tune mine most of the time like the top four strings on a regular guitar. Sometimes I tune to open G and sometimes I drop the low D to C. The tenor sounds great, but the Bariton Uke is easier to play because of the nylon strings.

I'm in the throes of moving house, so I haven't had much time to play it, but the little bit of strumming I subjected it to at the post office showed that once I get the truss rod slightly adjusted I'll have a new six string favourite. I'm chuffed to bits over this bit of business...

Oh, and I got a used Seagull 12 string for a very favourable price that I'll try using for my "mandocello" tuning.

So far I'm very happy with it - got it earlier today. I think I'll want the lower strings to degrade a bit - they have a very shiny tone that contrast too much to the higher strings. Using it for midi tracking on the vg99 is better at detecting the correct tone, but it tends to trigger when I let go of strings a bit too easily.
Connecting it directly to a mixer seems to give a nice enough sound. I was messing around with some acoustic presets on the Pod X3, which seemed ok too.
I think I can use this for many different things. Which is what I was hoping for.
Also it feels very nice - the size of an electric guitar with wide neck. The acoustic tone is good enough that I can play it "offline" when practicing with no problem.

It's been a long time since I've had a groove box, but I've gotten a little too used to computers and DAWs, so I thought I'd simply augment, instead of add a whole new hardware device to my system.
Arturia to the rescue! I dig this little box. Even if some of the projects are pretty heavy on the CPU, but only because they do synth modelling, instead of simple sampling. This is true for a whole slew of vintage drum machines like 808, 909, 707, 727, 606, etc etc. I'm very happy with this little monster.
Eventually I'd like to play with the MIDI Controller mode, which just opens the hardware interface to be used with anything else...like maybe Lemur, or a special Ableton Python script I'd imagine. Still, the VST can output MIDI, even if it's only for note data, not control data.

I have the Universal Audio DSP for that. Their plugin is absolutely brilliant. The Roland hardware clone is perfect for the analog modular synth.

Well the roland stuff isn't so good with piezo pickups, run your finger along the bridge of your godin while using the VG99 to see the problem, its especially noticeable when using the synth models and it also effects the midi tracking performance.
RMC do a subsonic filter that you insert into the VG99 that filters out the problem frequencies from the pickup.

Aha! Yes I have noticed at times that an unreasonable amount of sound happens when I let go of a string. Thanks, I'll have a look at the filter.

Just noticed the email address in my post was missing: info@rmcmusic.com
I must admit I just gave up using piezo guitars with my VG99 and only used the GK3 with it so I have not got one of the filters.
I just went to get my Godin to give it a test with the VG99 to see if I get the note triggering on release but one of the strings has bust and I cannot find a replacement set!
Ill get some strings ordered and give it a test, just to check though you have got the VG99 software version that allows you to choose the type of piezo pickup for the guitar? |
