This is something that is not all that difficult to do, once the concept is worked out and one understands both the look and feel and the requirements.
I wouldn't want to scan every site out there and build a database, but for members here, I don't see why there can't be a portal to downloadable and streaming music that is hosted on other sites. It would require the the other sites allow deep linking. This is essentially what we are already doing with the online music forum now, isn't it?
I've been thinking for a long time about adding a feature to the forum that allows hirearchial forums. Thus, there might be an online music category, in that there would be forums for every member that wanted. There he/she could post links to online music, and have discussions about the music. Like what we have now, with another level of hierarchy. This wouldn't take any more server space than we already have, and it won't seriously impact our network either. Network is the expensive part of hosting a site, BTW. |

I think that is a splendid idea.

I think a portal for streaming members music would be way cool!
BTW, in case there was any confusion, I wasn't suggesting in any of this that electro-music.com take on the task of replacing Mp3.com. My point was to toss out some ideas regarding hosting sites.
But the ideas you are suggesting here sound great. I think I've said it before in another thread - I'd just like to see a place that simply listed members followed by direct links to sites where you could hear their music. I guess I'm lazy, but I'm thinking of a quick jump. The information may already be here somewhere, but for some it could be in one of many forum threads, or maybe you need to go to the member list and click on their web site (which may in turn refer you to another web site), or maybe it's under 'Links' (although I got the impression that was primarily for artists not on this site).
The hirearchial forums - I guess I'm missing the point here because as you say we already have an Online Music forum as well as an Introduce Yourself forum and anybody can jump in there to run threads about their work - as many of us have. Perhaps there are some members that don't feel that comfortable listing their music links in a forum format for a variety of reasons. If that's the case then we might miss out on hearing it. Or maybe it would be optional.
Like I've said, for me, it's primarily the music. I'm chugging along with only a 56 k modem but I keep that pipeline full as much as I can.
Sounds like you've already been thinking along these lines and you've got the view from the top - it's great to have a community to seek & share & I think anything you do to make the music more accessible would be fantastic. _________________ Que la musique sonne - Edgard Varese

No, the links section is for everyone, members and non-members.

Well, everything is there now, as you say, but it's a bit messy. The hierarchical forums might make the site easier to navigate. I'm not sure how it will work out.
I appreciate your comments very much. |
