I could defenitly use a build in Mic pre amp just like the keys version...
And a view midi knops at the front....and a small lcd, so at least you can see witch patch/performance is running....

I can remember a guy fixing a joystick on his NM classic...

thanks for the link, probably the theory does not work since there is no keyboard connected to the engine model...to bad Sad

...if all you want to do is stuff a mic preamp inside the box, you probably could...you might even be able to add some controllers, but they would have to be interfaced via midi inside the case.

This particular one is Rob's probably as it is without a switch, Wout has two AFAIK, and I have one as well.

Wout and Rob are also on this forum, btw.

There is also this thread in the archive.

You could try to find out maybe how the keyboard detection works.

jan, rob explained (in the thread that i linked to), that there is a differant rom in the engine and the kbd...the engine likely doesn't even look for a kbd. i could imagine replacing the rom and hacking a false kbd detection, but that's more than i would want to get into on something as expensive as a g2 engine.

That joystick is awesome!

I don't understand how Clavia could see that, then NOT put a joystick in the G2! (Although I guess there are one or two other things which we could say that about... )

The new Metasonix synth:
http://musicthing.blogspot.com/2005/11/behold-mighty-metasonix-s-1000-tube.html
has a joystick with a built-in envelope trigger.

well, i'm pretty sure that the mic input is not in addition to the 4 external ins, so a simple switch that goes between using one of the existing inputs and a mic input would do the job (if you use a 1/4" connector rather than xlr, you could have it switch automatically).

on the other hand, the engine could simply go into a 2 space rack with a mic preamp in the other space.

if you are not looking to use a super high quality mic, the radio shack tie clip mic is about $25, and puts out a signal that is close enough to line level that you won't need a preamp.

I use an external mic preamp, even though I have the G2 keys. It's not for quality, it's just a Behringer SHARC, but I use it to kill feedback from my didje (sticking a Mic up a tube while near a PA system isn't, in general, a good idea for avoiding feedback). Plus, it has compression and phantom power. I very much recommend it for live work (I assume that's why you want it very compact?).

the sharc has cool features (i have one, and the band owns another 2 or 3), especially for the price. i hardly use it, but i will say that when, on occasion, i need it for something, it is a little cryptic to get everything setup correctly...not impossible, and if i used it regularly (or spent some time with it when i didn't all of a sudden "need it", it would probably not be an issue. nothing wrong with the thing, but it is not like using a channel strip....and the powersupply is about as big as the unit!

It has lots of little random features too, like line delays for speaker timing. And a noise gate. A little swiss army knife of audio, if you will.

Hey, I know that guy for a long time... At least I remember him polishing that steel shaft on that joystick. Very Happy

On the question of modding the G2 Engine with G2 key features I can quote the Clavia developers:
The key versions have their specific features on the panel circuit board, e.g. the A/D converter for the pedal input is on the panel board, also some of the mic preamp circuitry. As there is no panel board in the Engine there is no straightforward way to add those features to an Engine. On startup the motherboard detects the presence of a panal board, if it can't find one all software that handles the G2 key and G2X specific features is simply not loaded and can't be activated (meaning all panel board functions plus mic preamp plus control pedal input).
The G2X panel board has an A/D chip with two more channels as the 3 oct G2 key, to handle the two extra global wheels. These global wheels cannot be simply added to the 3 oct G2 key, as it lacks A/D channels to read them.

And that's how it is. Sad
